Conservatism- Role of the state

Some conservatives want to reduce the role of the state but some want it to be authoritarian. How is this possible?

:/
All conservatives agree the states should have a role to maintain order and security as they agree over humans being imperfect (rational or capable of training is subject to belief) but they ultimately concede to Hobbes over a state to prevent conflict and disorder.

I think you may be confused over the nation state, it embodies various view over the state having a national identity, German and Italian conservatives argue the state predates the society, however American and British conservatives synthesise the state and nation to a joint identity, however the new right have a paradoxical view

They believe that the state to be powerful by being roll backed (reduced in rolls) you may associate with Thatcherism and the end of corporatism alongside privatisation of industry such as railways or steel and coal, they see this as making the state strong as it can act greatly in security and order the core role.

Because conservatism is not some unified ideology, like other movements, it has sub-groups within it. Hence why it can seem like it has contradictory outlooks
