Are M&S right to display women's underwear at the shop

M&S are refusing to back down over a row about them having underwear displayed at the front of their stores, are they in the right here? https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-nottinghamshire-46279172

The display should be taken down.

Its offensive to us men that struggle with women. It is a reminder of what we could have if we weren't rejected by women that look down on us.
How can it possibly be wrong for a retailer to display its wares in its window? How can it be wrong to suggest that its wares are 'must-have' (which is essentially something that is modern and popular)?

People who complain about this display are saying far more about themselves than they are about M&S.
Best quality underwear.

Yes that is the way I see, seems some people have nothing better than to find something to complain about.

Yes.

Customers will vote with their feet if they don't want to shop there.

End of story.
Can't believe it's this big a deal
It's a marketing strategy. The amount of things which are seen as must haves in so many brochures which really aren't is ridiculous.
They're just like any other business trying to make money
I have promised myself that I will cease shopping at any supplier that bows to this sort of silly pressure.
Simple solution: put men's underwear in the window too. Ideally with pictures of scantily clad male models.

I'm pretty sure in the men's underwear department area bit at m&s they do have underwear on display on a mannequin. "I hope I spelt that right"
Ugh people have too much free time nowadays, there's bigger stuff to worry about honestly

The last time feminists made an actual, convincing argument I think the Titanic was still afloat.
Okay, as a feminist, this is dumb. It's lingerie. What's the alternative? Hide the underwear at the back of the shop and get called out for sl*t shaming? It's a product (well, products). I get that they sell other stuff but there were other window displays and other mannequins. Sure, they could have tossed in a mannequin wearing boxers, but like what's done is done and if you look at actual statistics waaay more women shop at M&S than men. Besides, men's underwear is all either plain or ugly. Regardless of gender, who is honestly going to think "oh, a pair of plain black boxers with a front slit. So unique and hot."

Well this is potential customers speaking up.

Anyway, this is a bit of disingenuous question. It's not only about the underwear, it's about the contrast to how they market to men right next to how they market to women.

Of course they have a right to do it. But people do have a right to tell them how sexist it is.
Surprised they did it as of what with it all lately, even more surprised they are not taking it down. As that famous quote we all know and love Sticks and Stones May Break My bones but there will always be something to offend a feminist....

Men: Must have outfits to impress
Women: Must have fancy little knickers

I think "feminists" will shut up once society sees equal amounts of

Women: Must have outfits to impress

This thread: https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=5687504

is talking about the mental health problems of young women. You honestly think a highly sexist and sexualized society plays no part in that? That girls feel society sees them in a certain way? How boys talk about them from what they've learnt/seen in porn, etc. ? If you do, you are either naive or purposefully ignorant.

Yes, this seems like a small issue, but all these "oh it's such a small thing" add up to a bigger picture.
Apparently there are a selection of window themes and they rotate.. I would agree with yudo about equality, but it may be male lingerie isnt a seller Consumers have the choice to shop elsewhere. Think its all blown out of proportion.
