How do American clothes sizes work

I'm in the UK trying to sort out Christmas presents with American Apparel and IDK how these sizes work. Trying to get something for my 11 year old brother and 16 year old sister. She's a size 12 and his clothes always just say age 11. Really don't want to wind up buying the wrong size.

A UK size 12 is the equivalent to a size 10 in American sizing. For your brother, you could go by what the measurements for his clothes are in centimetres.
