Glasgow School of Art Applicants 2019

Hello, I thought I would start a thread for those applying to GSA [at all levels] to start in 2019. I recently submitted my UCAS application, so just wanted to create a thread to allow people to post their queries, concerns, or just connect with other applicants.

Heya, I just sent in my UCAS application there too  to study fine art photography. What course have you applied for?

I’ve also applied to study fine art photography! I submitted my application and folio a week ago  Are you applying from high school? Or college?

Hey! I’m applying for painting and printmaking! Still to send off my ucas application though

How did you find the process so far? Have you applied anywhere else? It feels like a long time until we will hear about interviews after the deadline  I’m excited to hear back

It’s been okay! I’m applying as a “mature student” ew so I’m doing it all independently which makes me miss the support school gave a bit but it’s going alright, still have time to do more work! I’m applying to edi, Dundee, slade and goldsmiths but tbh GSA is my top choice and if I don’t get it I’d think about doing a foundation course somewhere instead. How about you?

I’m also doing this solo - this will be my second degree due to a career change so I’m applying solo too but only to GSA, it’s my only and first choice which is quite risky. Like you if I don’t get in, I’m going to pursue photography/art either way and might look at courses abroad like Germany or somewhere else.

I sure miss the school organising everything for me >.< I’ve found it exciting yet stressful - especially the folio part because I’ve been doing all the work while working full time but it’s been a good challenge. Did you attend any of the open days?

You’re pretty much in the same boat as me except I’m changing my degree haha. Yeah GSA is pretty much the only one I want so just applying elsewhere to maybe get useful feedback. And I’m the same regarding photography- I‘m a freelance photographer at the moment

Yeah I’m the same, i feel the same way! The folio is my biggest stress at the moment tbh but I’m enjoying it  I didn’t because I was ill on the one if planned to go to but I used to do classes when I was younger and am doing some other ones at the moment

Haha cool! How come you’re applying for painting if you have a background in photography? What type of freelancing do you do? That’s really cool. I currently work as a research assistant in health >.< and my last degree was in politics so this is a big change in direction.

You didn’t miss much at the open days - the only useful thing I learned was at the preapplication session for photography and that was the courses are very broad and you can paint in photography or take photos in painting and also that it’s okay to switch to another specialism if you need to once you’re on the course. That was really helpful to know and as an analogue photographer it was good to see their darkroom facilities even though that will change slightly once they move buildings.

Once you’ve got your folio done that’s the most difficult bit, I think it’s easier once that’s done.

Photography is something I’ve just taught myself and do at the moment would rather do a degree in painting haha. I do a variety of events/weddings and fashion/editorial work and model portfolios! I love it! And same, I was doing medicine before 😬

Ahhh yeah I felt I probs wouldn’t miss much by not going, a lot of what I wanted to know I found online anyway. It’s good there’s still a crossover in the departments then and it’s not strictly one or the other.

Yeah, I’ll breath easy once it’s all finished and sent in hahah

Hey guys, I’m just getting ready to send of my folio and have no idea what to talk about in my folio statement?? What topics did you guys discuss in it - just some of your past work and the concepts, and then a bit about why you want to go to Glasgow?

Hey, I just viewed it like an artist statement so talked about my inspirations, work I like from GSA graduates, and past work/key themes in my work that has developed. I think I also mentioned ideas I wanted to explore during the course. I think if you’ve applied for more than one uni then defos talk about why you want to go to gsa a bit more than in the statement. I only applied to gsa so I had already talked a lot about why I wanted to go so I used the statement to talk about my work and what I want to do.

Yeah I asked @DontSkimReadit about the folio statement too and while I haven’t written it yet, I’m going to just do the same and expand upon what I wrote in my statement: inspiration for past work, more in depth concept explanations, more about Glasgow etc. I pretty much said it all on my statement already so will be a variation of that. What is it you’re applying for?

That's cool! From college, I'm currently studying on a level 3 UAL photography course. How about you? Do you have an instagram of your work? Would love to see.
