Calculate the speed of light in cubic zirconia as a fraction of the speed of light in air. Give your answer to 3 significant figures.
Refractive Index of Cubic Zirconia = 2.16
Refractive Index of air = 1
Refractive index = ratio of speed of light in vacuum to speed of light in medium

n = c/v
c = speed of light in vacuum
v = speed of light in medium

so Refractive Index of Cubic Zirconia / Refractive Index of air = speed of light in cubic zirconia / speed of light in air

so 2.16 = 3 x 10^8 / v
v = 1.39 x 10^8 m/s :smile: hope this helps

I typed the answer but its still wrong. and also the answer section has no m/s as a unit

Oh! They are asking the fraction! It is simply the ratio of refractive index!

So Refractive Index of Cubic Zirconia / Refractive Index of air = speed of light in cubic zirconia / speed of light in air = 1/2.16 = 0.463 no units!

how would you do this question?
Crown Glass - 1.51
air =1

how would you do this question?
Crown Glass - 1.51
air =1

1.51 sin c = 1 sin 90
sin c = 1/1.51
c = 41.5

critical angle is 41.5, there is no refraction
so 0
when i put zero its tells me
d8.5.png
so I am not sure

there is reflection
so angle is 50
try 50
assuming it's this page https://isaacphysics.org/questions/ch_d_p8

the instructions tell you to enter 99 with 'none' as units if refraction is impossible
always read the instructions carefully :smile:
