What is potential energy?

e.g. the mitochondria converts potential energy of sugar molecules into atp energy

They are referring to the chemical potential energy stored in the bonds

Scroll down to chemical energy

Here is an extract:
"On a chemical level, the bonds that hold the atoms of molecules together have potential energy. This type of potential energy is called chemical energy, and like all potential energy, it can be used to do work."

Ahh so in this case: chemical energy is the same as potential energy and this is the energy stored in bonds that is converted into atp energy?
