The Student Room Group

rare for home schooled student to go to oxbridge unis?

just wondering, i only hear about state and private schools, but never home schooled students/self taught students

what if they get good grades? would they have a chance? or does the school they go to matter..
School doesn't matter.
It is possible for them to get in-I don't see why not

When I was homeschooling my grandson, several home schooled children went to Oxbridge. Home schooling gets a bad press. Some of it is deserved and some isn’t. It is possible. Anything is possible.

There some home schooled students studying at Oxbridge, especially in this forum (a few do Maths at Cambridge, but forgot their username, but usually appear in the STEP threads).

As more than 99% of children go to a school (private or state), they will cover 99% of those gaining entrance to oxbridge. The remaining 1% (potentially even less) are so few that they probably just aren't widely reported
The number of children being home educated in the UK has risen by over 40% in the last 3 years. The exact numbers are unknown as many children are not registered for school when they reach compulsory school age so those figures aren’t available.

It's simply because very few apply.

The colleges certainly welcome applicants. Have a look at this from King's College, Cambridge
http://www.kings.cam.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/apply/home-educated.html

And this from Oxford

The only home-schooled people I've ever met I met at an Oxford open day.

They were, er, quite strange :o:

Hi! Congrats on your offer, even if its a bit late. May I ask what homeschooling system you used? And how you found the homeschooling?

I did CIE IGCSE and A levels. My subjects were maths and sciences which are objective so the prep and revision wasn't too bad. There are great resources online like tsr, stack exchange which helped me whenever I got stuck. The most difficult thing for managing time. I usually ended up spending a lot of time on super curricular activities causing me to rush the exam prep.
I know it’s not the topic but I would say home schooling probably improves your odds. If you’re being homeschooled you’re more likely to be self teaching or supported by good attention providing tutors (more likely at least theoretically).

Give it a go. You have no idea if it will work, but that’s the position near enough every other applicant is in.

Do your best, good luck.
