Thanks Sophia! I saw people with scores in the 8's being offered DAS, however I have a feeling the majority of these were generalist type roles and/or Brexit focused ones. I'm worried that I'll be less successful due to only being interested in such a niche specialist stream!

But I'm going to try not to overthink it and be open minded with whatever may come up!! At least the DAS can keep us going for a bit. I forget, is your FCO appointment an internship?

Or you could think of it as.... I’m suitable for a general role and I can do specialist sci & eng roles. The woman I met who had a HR DA didn’t apply for HR Fast Stream (don’t know what she applied for though!)

Yep it’s a 9 month internship. So come May 31st I’m jobless.... unless I find a way to stay! 🤞🏻

I didn't think of it like that! I limit myself that I can only do science but maybe that's not true.

Good luck, you've probably got a really good chance of being kept on. Also there's loads of jobs on their website, this internship will have given you loads of experience!

I’m sure they won’t just look at sci

Ok try again.... damn app!

I’m sure they won’t just look at sci & eng. it makes no sense when the assessment process up to FSAC is generic. So there’s no reason your less suited to a Generalist role than someone with a similar FSAC score who has a random degree and applied as a Generalist.

I can only find 3 FCO roles on civil service jobs :frown: there’s loads internally though!

I presume you're exempt from applying to the internal ones?

Sounds promising, if we do end up in the civil service that there's a lot of scope for moving around. Just gotta get our pesky foot in the door first 😂

Aye I can view the internal jobs but can’t apply... but yes it bodes well if we get that foot in!

Is there a certain period you have to wait until you can apply for other internal jobs? Knowing me, if I don't like my role I would move on as soon as possible.

Also are the internal roles mostly for experienced or specialist individuals or are there also entry level roles

I believe once your probation period is up (6 months) you are able to apply for internal roles and transfers

I’m afraid I don’t know. I know in the FCO most posts are fixed period but I’ve heard of “short touring”. Not sure how easy it is!

I’ve not looked internally on civil service jobs just fco jobs board
Does anyone know how they go about giving roles? Reckon they'll just work their way down from best to worst score? Or do all candidates above a certain grade get considered?
Didn't get through to FAB but did ok on my FSAC (9.37) for DDaT, if I was potentially offered a role through DAS would it still be a tech related role? or literally any one of the departments can look at my profile and see if they want me? also is this dependent on the additional information at all.

It doesn't appear to be by working their way down, last year EO roles were offered before HEO ones.

It could be different this year, though. It is likely that all candidates above a certain threshold are considered, it's then up to different departments to express an interest in you.

There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to the departments people were offered last year. For some specialist and highly technical roles, candidates were offered specific roles which tied into their education and work experience, beyond that it appears to be random.

I don't think anything beyond your FSAC score (and perhaps feedback) is considered for the DAS.
Guys, is there somewhere with stats about how many DAS roles are given versus AC candidates etc?

Is it highly, highly likely that anyone with over 11 will be offered something?

I don't have any stats, but in the FAQ it has a bit about DAS, saying roles will be offered in merit order. I assume such a high score would pretty much guarantee that.

And do you think 'on merit order' means how good our AC scores are?

I don’t know if everybody who scored above a certain mark were contacted, but I can’t see why not when they’re so committed to the marks deciding who gets onto the fast stream in merit order, it would be a bit weird to pick random people.

Last year people with high 8s (and I assume nothing under 2) to mid-9s were offered EO and mid to high 9s HEO and a variety in between depending on scheme. They had about 500 of each, and obviously we know some people are offered but turn it down because of the location or the nature of the post (for example I saw they once offered someone who was currently a HEO an EO post!)

They could have been in real need of people last year, and I don’t know why it would be any different this year, Brexit could be the best thing to ever happen to our civil service prospects (silver living?)

OK, I get it. Thanks, that's very informative. I got a good score at the AC (well over 11) so am feeling reasonably confident. The only thing I'm concerned about is them looking at my profile and deciding no thanks - ie, everyone over high 8s is considered equally and there are 1,000 roles with 3,000 candidates. If that makes sense.

On the subject of silver linings, on the DAS we could find ourselves in a nicer job that starts sooner with a much better salary and no moving around every 6 or 12 months!

Sorry about the FSB, but I’m sure they will contact you if they’re contacting anyone for the DAS with your score. I think the score and what scheme you were in for decides EO or HEO and what area, just not what the exact role is.

Looking at last year’s thread for comfort, replies just drop off after a while, but the statistics say 500 EO and 500 HEO so a really good number, just none of them posted. So I think if we do get contacted and do get something, we should make sure to write it here so future years’ applicants can find it!

My friend who is on the fast stream said some DA people prefer it for those reasons you mentioned, and they can really get stuck into a role and when they want to move, they can apply for something they want rather than get placed. Not to mentioned we’d get our foot in the door and have access to the jobs only offered internally. Fingers and toes crossed now!

They do say that it's based on AC scores and that 'on merit basis' means the higher the score the better your chances. We just don't know how many roles there will be or how many candidates. Although last year it was a fair amount and they said 'a limited number of roles will be available'. This year they don't say that so, with brexit, hopefully that means a large number!
