Pigeon tapping at my window

There was a pigeon tapping at my office window a few minutes ago. Tap... tap... tap... tap tap... tap tap tap.... tap.... tap tap...

He/she flew off when I tapped back.

Was this a sign of intelligence, was I misreading social signalling? I assumed the pigeon was confusing its reflection with another pigeon. Might I have been wrong?

Quite worried about this now. I don't want to unsettle the pigeon mentally, or portray the human race as unfeeling brutes, uninterested in opening a potentially rewarding dialogue with the pigeon race.

Hoping I didn't blow it.

Stop! Have you considered that pigeons are quite intelligent birds? They do not wish to be eaten by the likes of us.
Pretty sure I've read a poem about this.

Don't let it in and don't speak to it.

A bird tapping your window is seen as a warning about death in many cultures, but I felt really liked by the pigeon.

@CheeseIsVeg we know who the pigeon was
How many times did you tap and at what frequency and timbre? 3 hard taps in quick succession for example is "I had sex with your parent and then killed your sister and made her into a pigeon pie, with said parent's permission" in Pigeonese. You may have just started a war.

Oh no. It was the start of human-dove relations. I couldn't even get the right species! I am so busted as regards birds liking me.
