Civil Service Direct Appointment Scheme 2019

Coming here after failing my statistical service FSB yesterday - this thread has made me feel a lot more positive so thanks everyone! I got 10.21 in my FSAC back in November so really hoping for DAS to come through.

So am I correct in thinking we’ll (hopefully) get an email asking for preferences, etc. from around the end of Feb onwards? I thought appointments were given in April so am a bit confused! Positive to think jobs could be started in June/July though, will be nicer to start earlier than September/October time!

Also would we need to attend any further interviews/assessment centres...?

The initial email from February onwards just asks you if you would like to be considered for the DAS, and lets you know if it is an EO or HEO position you are being considered for. There won't be any details about the departments or role that you could end up working at this stage.

After you've returned your Expression of Interest (EoI), you will hear back around April time with the departments that are interested in taking you on. June/July seemed to be the earliest that people last year started their new jobs, for most it will likely be a bit later. I believe you are asked about any preferences for start dates in the initial email sent out in February, this helps students who have exams or thesis' that don't finish until later in the year.

You don't need to attend any further assessment centres or any formal interviews (except maybe for some highly specialist positions), there is just an informal phone call to discuss the role. Some departments held open days for new starts through the DAS too.

Thanks - all super helpful to know! I’ll keep you updated if I hear anything.
Does anyone think the SDIP has anything to do with this. As in, if I am accepted to SDIP, will that mean that the direct appointment team won't get in touch with me, because I'm doing the internship? I can still cancel now, and direct appointment sounds much better tbf.

I would recommend speaking to Parity (probably calling and emailing to check with different people because we all know they're pretty inconsistent with their answers).

But bear in mind even if you do withdraw from the SDIP there's no guarantee of a direct appointment.
I joined as a HEO direct appointment after failing digital stream fsb (what is now ddat) in may 2017. I was offered it in July and joined in November 2017. I recently moved on promotion to SEO in a different department in December 2018.

Feel free to ask me anything.

I got an email from DHSC offering posts for immediate start in London/Leeds. Sadly can't take them up on it, but the email said this wouldn't affect eligibility when the DAS opens properly next month.

Incidentally, bit discouraged to read last years' threads. Really can't/don't want to move to London but apparently when candidates were in a similar position, they were met with a lot of tooth-sucking and didn't seem to get many offers. Is this an accurate impression?

I don't know about DAS but I think generally with Fast Stream roles the expectation is that you'll be flexible and able/willing to relocate so it wouldn't surprise me if DAS roles were mainly London-based unfortunately!

Fingers crossed you get offered something suitable! Lots of departments do have regional offices though, so hopefully DAS will be less London-centric.

What was your fast stream score and were the posts mainly HEO or EO level?

Yes. It is accurate. Very few DAS joined outside of London, at least at HEO. Almost all HEO were in London. If it's EO your chances of being outside London are much higher. Your progression is much faster in London though.

I'm sure even in the fast stream you have to be open to living in London and potentially being moved every six months. If you have to relocate which you almost definatly will why not London ?

I guess for a lot of people it was worth having to move to London for the fast stream, but maybe not for a permanent position in a department they didn't exactly choose...

I live in London myself so I'm happy to take anything!
I failed my FSAC with a score of 9.01, so my only hope this year lies with DAS.
Then yesterday i got offered an AO role which I applied many many months back and got reserve listed for, if i take this job in the meantime will it negatively affect possibility of DAS contacting me?

Temporary relocation is one thing, but permanent relocation to what is an incredibly expensive city (and one I just don't like) on a salary lower than the Fast Stream's just isn't an attractive prospect. Added to which, being willing to relocate to almost anywhere in the country is pretty flexible, I don't think it's unreasonable to prefer to avoid just one city, even if it is the capital.

You get paid more in London by quite a substantial ammount. If you start as HEO you will be on more money than the fast streamers, not to mention the increased oppotunity to progress in London. But each to their own! Just read that only 18% of civil service jobs are in London so fingers crossed you get something outside!

Hmmm, I am following this thread for future ref. I haven't actually been told I am unsuccessful yet after my FSB but I can't realistically see any other outcome, so I may see what the DAS has to say. I got a pretty good FSAC score (12+) so I hope I am considered. I actually already have an offer for an fixed-term role in the Civil Service, but I'm pretty open to the idea of exploring permanent contracts or (perhaps not unrealistically) lining up a DAS role for when that contract comes to an end. Fingers crossed for all of us!
To all of those hoping for a job outside London I just wanted to share the proportion of each grade in each location and you can start to understand why progression is much faster if you make your career in London.
