STP Genomic Counselling 2019 Discussion

Hi, I have applied for Genetic Counselling for the first time this year, have been longlisted and atm keeping my fingers crossed for the interview stage :smile:
I applied last year and got shortlist reserve with a score of 49. Hoping graduating with a good grade, some additional volunteering and my current role with a lot of project management ( so good scope to talk about leadership/teamwork) might push me over the edge to get an interview. But I really have no clue, haha.

Hi! Thanks for setting this up :smile: I also applied last year and got on the shortlist reserve with a score of 49. Since then, I graduated with a first in genetics with a PTY, I work full time as a carer and part time as an assistant in SEN schools and behaviour units, and I’m doing as many online short courses that are relevant as I can. I think it was the caring experience that I was mainly missing out on last year so hopefully that gives me the extra few points for interview this year!

You’re definitely right, for GC, it is more about the caring/counselling experience and getting this across in the application I think. Like they know if you’ve got a degree in biology/genetics that you have a sound understanding of that, so it’s deifnitely talking more about your experiences working with vulnerable people for sure. I could be totally wrong but my sources suggest this is true lol.
My background is psychology, a counselling diploma and I have worked in mental health for three years so it’s been easier for me than some people as I’ve had lots to talk about re that, however my genetics knowledge is something I have had to demonstrate in my application as it’s not a given that I have studied it. I have done a short course in genetics though so I put that in there.

Hi! Can I ask what your experience and education was last year to get 49 and on reserve?

Yeah, sure :smile: I was in my final year of my MBiol course (4 year integrated masters) with a heavy emphasis on genetics, my final year being a year long research project, and I'd done a 10 week lab internship.I had a year and a half's experience working part time as a support worker for a range of different clients, including lots with genetic disorders, and I worked as a PA for a woman with Down's Syndrome. To develop my counselling skills I volunteered with SOVA as a mentor for young offenders and took an online counselling course.

I'd also met with lots of STP trainees, shadowed a GC team meeting in London and shadowed at a clinic in Newcastle for two days. :smile:

Oh wow! you did all that and didnt get an interview? thats crazyyyy!

Of course! I was in my last year of me genetics degree which had a year working in a lab as part of it so I did some research into a genetic disorder called kleefstra syndrome. I’d done a 10 week counselling course, was volunteering at a residential home and had experience working in SEN schools, and I’d been for a chat with the GC department local to me. I was also course rep for genetics.
Second time applicant here. Got 44 last year and was shortlist unsuccessful. I lacked caring experience and so have worked on improving that this year however after looking at the vast amount of experience you all have, I’m suddenly not feeling hopeful!

I don't think we can expect shortlisting to come back until the 5th of March at the earliest!

The longlisting email said they don’t expect to release the results of shortlisting til w/c 11th March so try to relax and forget about it for a few weeks x

Have you applied to Cardiff too? They’re sooooooo strict with their entry requirements. Having issues now proving I have specifically 800+ Hours of caring experience :frown:
