Sadiq Khan criticised for taking holiday in middle of knife crime crisis

Health secretary Matt Hancock has criticised Sadiq Khan for not cancelling a holiday to Morocco after a 17 year old girl was killed in East London.

Shows how much he cares. London’s an absolute mess now, knife crime, acid attacks, moped crime all up and he’s jetting off on a holiday to Morocco
As much as I dislike this guy, he is still entitled to leave. What harm is his temporary absence going to do, exactly?

He should stay on holiday forever. That way something might actually get done about the knife problem!
Agree with the above.. he's allowed a holiday. And it's not as if this is a temporary short term crisis that needs dealing with, it's a long ongoing problem that's not going to be solved in the two weeks or however long he's on holiday.
I kind of get the feeling the people objecting would object no matter what he did *shrug*
He is as entItled to a holiday as much as anyone else.
Unlike the rest of us he will probably be spending a great deal of his holiday time working. It’s not as if he’s going to the back of beyond and can’t be contacted. If this was a one off event then maybe but sadly this happens every day. It needs a long term solution. It won’t be fixed in two weeks

The same amount will still get done about it whether he's there of not. The dopey **** is too busy crying about brexit rather than standing up to his actual responsibilities.
He can't do anything personally to stop people stabbing each other.

It is the remit of Commissioner **** to do something about it.
Knife crime is such an overblown problem. Yes it has gone up a bit (across the country, not just London) but unless you’re a gang member you have very little to worry about. Homicides have gone down this year compared to the same date last year and in fact murder and knife crime went down again in the second half of last year, even though you wouldn’t probably would think so since the media has been obsessed with knife crime recently. Before, they wouldn’t report every instance of murder on national news but now they do.

What exactly is the bloke supposed to do, get dressed up in black spandex and go out and fight crime himself?

It's easy to criticse, but I don't see anyone coming up with any practical solutions for what the Mayor of London ought to be actually doing right now.

You can appeal to emotion as much as you want but the statistics speak for themselves. Knife crime is a pretty small problem in the grand scheme of things and the UK still has one of the lowest murder rates in the world. We’re not going to be able to reduce knife crime that much further. It’s still much lower than it was back in the late nineties and early 2000s.
The problem is not just him but the state of policing in general, the police have turned into a condolence service, they come along after the crime has happened twiddle their thumbs and either take 3 years to do anything or just never do anything at all. We need far more boots on the ground actually patrolling and making people feel safer and far harsher punishments

And to do that, you'd have to undo all the cuts that have been made to the police over the past few years.

Or stop the police using their resources to tackle stupid 'crimes'. giving the police a trillion pounds to do as they please would result in a trillion pounds of useless officers

In order to actually have punishments we need a functioning legal system first.

In either case it's up to the Conservative government to do something about this, the Mayor of London does not have the jurisdiction.
