Me and my mates bought a car for £250 (we were only 15) and used it for joyriding. It lasted about 3 weeks until the brakes completely went and it got stolen.

You can probs get an okay car for £600

More importantly, what does it cost you to insure? You will often find that really cheap cars are actually more expensive to insure (because drivers don't look after them and they are more likely to have an accident).

Unless you are mechanically confident I wouldn't really recommend it.

I wouldn't say so - depends on the status of the car! I got my car for £650 when it had just passed it's MOT and works pretty well. Look at how long it has until it's due for it's MOT and how much it will cost to insure. There's no point paying £600 now to pay more for it to pass an MOT in a couple of months!

I honestly hate these kinds of threads because shortly there will be people jumping on who know nothing about cars but they will be telling you that for £600 it must be dead and ready for scrap. As someone coming from a motor background, I can tell you the following.

My existing cars stand me at the following:
05 Civic - £275.00
00 Logo - £450.00
97 Discovery - £400.00
02 IS200 - £280.00
04 Mini - £425.00

All of our cars are safe. The price does not determine the quality of car. The trick is finding the right one at the right price. Do you have anyone that can come with you to view it? I would want to see that it has a valid MOT and what the advisories are. You also want someone that can take a good look at it, take it for a drive and recognise the knocks it might make.
