Police confiscated computers- need help

This morning police confiscated mm family'scomputers and said last year somebody had downloaded a picture of child pornography.
I have never ever looked at,or downloaded child pornography. Can this happen without knowing? It may have been the people subletting in our house.
They said the person used a file sharing software- can someone elaborate on this?
Does anyone have advice on what i should do if they do find something on my computer, although I have no idea how it got there????????

Get legal advice and not ask a student forum.
the police are aware that other people can use a computer apart from the owner if it is in a shared space. it is possible that someone hacked your wi-fi as well.

They took more than one computer.
I'm just really worried

if you have done nothing wrong then don't worry. the police will be looking for a pattern of pervy downloading.

Sorry for asking so many questions, and I'm aware you may not be able to answer them all - what about regular adult sites? I'm aware those aren't illegal, could they cause a problem? And things such as pop ups, movie sites that lead to adult sites etc

Thank you for this it's made my next steps a little clearer

adult porn is perfectly legal in the UK. the police are not interested in that.
So downloads such as images like that(if there even are any) shouldn't cause a problem?

File sharing software can be things like downloading from pirate bay or via programmes like utorrent.

You shouldn't worry when you haven't done anything wrong. As other posters have said, even if they find a picture they can't prove it was you downloading it (as you say it wasn't you and anyone can use someone else's computer/laptop), and they're not likely to be interested in pursuing someone over one image, which could be a mistake - they're more likely to be looking for a pattern of suspicious downloads.

Is your computer backed up? As, if they do find something illegal (not legal adult porn), then they may destroy your hard drive.

I have attempted using pirate bay for games, but never actually managed to use it. And this was years ago. I also have u torrent on it, but downloaded it years ago and never used it. My computer isn't backed up, but there as nothing on it that I need to have.

That's good then - I don't think you could have accidentally downloaded it. And having utorrent isn't illegal by itself

Just happened to me too. HorribleExperience, similar explanation they gave. Shared house, we’re all innocent but the main thing is I need my devices for work as I’m a composer. They said we’d get the devices back in 6-8 weeks but it’s hard to believe them. How long did it take to get your devices back?
