Want to know about accommodation, nightlife, community, or anything at all in St Andrews?

For people considering applying to St Andrews: ask any questions here. Anything you can't find on the site or just can't be bothered to look for, or anything the prospectus won't tell you.

A student already here such as me or Caitlin will answer and hopefully sort things out for you.

Following on from your question in the old thread (which was closed as it reached 10,000 posts):

In terms of content, the mathematics courses at most of the top unis will be roughly the same. What's different is how the lecturers will engage with you. I can't speak for Warwick, but at St Andrews there are many maths lecturers who are always happy for students to email or visit their office with questions. You also get a tutor for each module, so you have nothing to worry about.

If you're eligible for fast track ("direct entry"), you can apply to start in either 1st or 2nd year, and can switch between them freely for the first week of lectures. If you leave it for longer than the first week, it can become quite difficult to change.

For students living outside of St Andrews, i.e Dundee. how easy is it to have a night out in St Andrews? Are there any buses running back to Dundee during the early hours of the morning? I'll be staying in Dundee and don't want to be missing out on certain social aspects.

The 99 (or N99 late at night) has buses running until 0305 from St Andrews to Dundee on a Friday and Saturday night, though they're not frequent after 2300. On a normal weekday the last bus is 2255.

Do the music rooms in Whitehorn and Agnes Blackadder have pianos?
What's the best hall for a first year student who wants a single room? I won't know anyone going to St Andrews so want a hall with a friendly, fun atmosphere. Thanks.

fun atmosphere - halls with roommates (traditional ones like McIntosh or Sallies) or modern 5-person flats (DRA etc.)

I'm an American that got into St Andrews' International Relations. Being from California, it's hard to hear how students feel about St Andrews. If anyone could answer my questions about St Andrews that would be awesome:

I swim and play football (not American football) competitively, do you know if I can play both sports at St Andrews or will I have to choose one or the other?
I have heard that St Andrews feels too small and somewhat, is that the general vibe of the community or is that the voice of the minority?
Speaking of community, is it very close-knit or more independent?
Is there a good nightlife aspect?

Agnes Blackadder (ABH) has a digital piano. I'm not sure about Whitehorn, but it wouldn't be much of a music room without one.

If they're affiliated with the Students' Association, they're at least £3/year. Things like Engineering are £10 because they need more materials, but most are £3.

I think sports clubs are usually more expensive, but subcommittees are free (in fact, every student is considered a member).

Yeah, sports clubs often need to include membership of the sports governing body in their membership cost which can make it seem quite costly. Lots of them also need to to get sports centre membership on top of it, so sports can really add up.

Nothing stopping you joining both as long as you have the time to do them.

It's a minority of people here that fine St Andrews too small, because most people come here knowing the size of the place, and those that would find it too small generally just don't come. There are a number of people that say it's too small to live here permanently, but great for being here for university, but equally there's loads of people who come here for uni and stay for years afterwards because it's great :smile:

Because of the size I would definitely say it's a close-knit community, and yes, the nightlife is good as long as you're not looking for clubbing. It's more about house parties and pubs and the occasional formal ball.
How difficult would it be to transfer from the BA (International Honours) degree program with W&M and St. A, to a regular MA (Hons) degree program at St. A? I have found this online, https://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/students/academic/ba-international/changestoyourstudies/transferrequests/.

How feasible would it be to do this transfer for first year? How about second year?

Has anyone with an initial offer for history received a reduced offer since?
Is there a certain time that accomodation applications open or is it just like as soon as it's April 1st they're open cause I'm getting a train quite early tomorrow and was planning on doing it then but I was wondering if it would even be open yet?

andrew melville is you are less well off (amazing hall tbh), otherwise you will probably get one of the more modern halls further out that have self-catered options like ABH, DRA etc. i really wouldn't rule out shared though. i personally couldn;t live with it but it comes with so many benefits you don't realise

I think the page is pretty clear about the transfer process, specifically in first year they say " submit a new application to St Andrews through the usual admissions routes. Applications will be considered in the context of the relevant applicant pool, and there is no guarantee that such an application will be successful.". Meaning you'd have to apply via UCAS and be considered with all the other people applying via UCAS.

If you want to do the normal St Andrews degree, why not just apply to the normal St Andrews degree?

Maybe try posting this in the 2019 applicants thread (https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=5598328&page=82), there's more likely to be people with offers in that thread than this one.
