insomnia

anyone else struggled with/developed insomnia since starting school, or even just in general over the past few months?

mine has gotten so bad that i have started meeting with a psychiatrist. i have tried an array of some-teen different medications, but all of which have had no effects on me

it’s weird, because i do miss sleep SO much but i also enjoy being a newfound night owl

anyway, before i start at uni this fall, i want to fix this problem

Are you not sleeping enough or just sleeping at odd hours?

I am the opposite of insomnia, if there is such a thing. I sleep around 830-9pm and wake up around 4-430am :nooo:

That Is not the opposite of Insomnia, not sleeping and sleeping at odd hours have nothing to do with each other you just have developed a circadian rhythm for those times in the day and insomnia is a medical disorder that is mainly caused by anxiety depression or stress

both. haha. i used to fall asleep at those times too; i liked sleeping early. now, i get in bed and even after putting away all electronics and practicing proper sleep hygiene, i can’t fall asleep until at least 3 hours of lying in bed BORED TO DEATH have gone by. what’s more, when i do fall asleep, i cannot stay asleep for more than an hour at a time. i wake up and fight again. the cycle repeats all night. i don’t even go to bed anymore because i would rather use my time

I know  That's why I was asking OP what their case was, whether they are not sleeping at all or just sleeping at odd hours (because the latter can be managed but the former is a problem).

You are getting help and that's the most you can do. I practice meditation and relaxing techniques (physiological relaxation) when I go to bed. Music doesn't help me at all because I get invested in that and I just can't sleep anymore. Just make sure to try everyday and you will get better.

Also, try focusing on the underlying matter, as your doctor who knows it better is already probably doing.

thank you. i appreciate your advice. i am tying to pursue more traditional methods of alleviating the stress that is underlying the issue. i will give mediation a go

It might not work for everyone but it worked for me. Especially this technique called Yoga Nidra. My psychi recommended it to me. She tried a bunch of things that didn't work and this did. I know there is no general rule for everyone but I was advising from my personal experience.

Yes but you don’t have insomnia. Scientific research has said that meditation increases mental performance and decreases the need for sleep they found that half an hour of meditation replaces an hour of sleep which for insomniacs who need sleep that isn’t good

Bold of you to assume I haven't had insomnia. And honestly stop coming at me with your oh-so-great knowledge.

I am not a psychotherapist and I don't know all this scientific shite. I was advising from personal experience. If you do need to feel great and exhibit your holier-than-thou attitude, do it in your classroom or workplace or wtv the hell it is you do.

Not once did you attempt to help OP, instead you came bashing at me. smh

I am tuning off from here. Adios! :ciao:

1 If your not a psychotherapist then why are you even on here giving advice to people with insomnia
2 personal experience gets trumped by facts and science
3 I do believe that I am very bold and confident thank you
4 and I exhibit my knowledge where ever I see fit and useful in situations
5 I’d rather bash at you for giving advice that you do not know will help or harm better to be safe than sorry

Are you saying that no prescribed or unprescribed sleep medication actually works on you? That is hard to believe but if it is true then you need to speak to your gp and ask to be referred to a hospital sleep specialist doctor who will most likely do an overnight sleep study on you to find out exactly what the causes of your problem are.

Get what from? Sorry ,i was referring to the thread starter who seemed to be saying that no medications help with insomnia.
OP i am exactly the same and have had insomnia for a very long time. Like yourself i may drop asleep around say 2am but by 3/4am at best, I’m wide awake again and i cannot get back to sleep. Alot of the time i have to go about my day to day routine on those two hours of sleep. I expect my body to want to sleep at some stage in the day to catch up,but it doesnt. This tends to be a cycle for about 3 days and then at which stage my body just literally shuts itself down at any given time on day 3 as it’s shattered. What I’ve been doing lately which has been a life saver is going on youtube and searching for white noise. I use things such as airplane noises or a fan, but if these noises are too sharp, they have pink noise and brown noise aswell.

Before you keep trying medication which i believe isn’t a fix as you will become reliant on them and if you cant get a hold of any/run out, you’ll be back to square one, try this. When you start to get tired, play this. You’ll see in the comments alot of insomniacs use it with great results
