Smart people actually go to non extradition countries, not chill in their embassy.

St Julian, the patron saint of rapists and absconders, has really let himself go. No wonder the Ecuadorians wanted to get shot of him. They'll probably have to turn a hose onto him and give the coppers new clothing.

It is ironic that his latest complaint has been about the release of surveillance footage of him, and an attempt to extort money from Wikileaks in exchange for not releasing it all.

It rather reminds one of the reported attempt by Wikileaks to extort $700,000 from Amnesty International in exchange for not releasing the names of Afghan civilians to the Taliban.

They are supposed to spy on foreign governments/ criminals not millions of their own citizens.It would actually hinder their spying ability.Listening in to 60 million irrelevant phone calls is only going to make your workload bigger surely.Its the kind of thing China or North Korea would do and reeks of totalitarianism.Even now we have censorship laws coming in plus porn laws where everyone will have to provide proof of age.Its actually becoming more authoritarian by the day.Take the sugar tax.Instead of educating people about the harmful impact of sugar they went the route of criminalizing everyone.Its important to protect your freedoms because one day we might have a state with all the same information who isn't quite as nice.

Only 40 years ago we had a government which criminalised being gay.Imagine if that government had had access to everyone's phone calls and web searches.A lot more innocent people would have been locked up.Or imagine that power in the hands of the Nazi government.Thats why it's a problem when governments spy on millions of their own people.You're naive if you think that it's not a problem.

Seems to have beaten the Swedish rape charges by hunkering in his bunker... And Iirc the Swedish had promised not to extradite him on to the USA after they were finished with him - so I'm not sure how clever he's actually been here.

On an an unsurprising note Donald Trump who was singing the praises of Wikileaks and Assange when he was embarrassing Mrs Clinton now claims to have hardly heard of the guy and his website.
I thought people here would have liked Mr Julian because he leaked the BNP member lists and showed attack helicopters blowing up innocent civilians in Iraq.

He always was, other than to anarchists and idiots. His leaks put lives at risk, caused massive disruption to the threatened, perfectlly innocent, people (and foreign agents of the US). Wikileaks tried to extort $700,000 from Amnesty International in order to avoid the leak (by Wikileaks) of the identies of innocent Afghan civilian helpers of the allies to the Taliban.

He is, of course, accused of actually hacking the US government systems, rather than merely receiving the stolen information, making him a traitor and a spy rather than a journalist as he claims to be.

And he's a scumbag.

tbh if it were me I might have just surrendered to the US so I could do my time and get on with my life

I mean imagine if he spent like 30 years in the Embassy till the day he died of old age but the US would have only jailed him for like 5 yrs or something

He also exposed American War crimes which I don't see anyone being prosecuted for.And a lot of what he did was just publishing the leaks rather than actually leaking them himself.By that logic the guardian and the New York Times should also be held to account.It seems that Dianne Abbott agrees with my point that this is about the hacking rather than the alleged sexual crimes.

The USA jails kids who smoke cannabis for 30 years, so what do you think they'll do with a guy who exposed American war crimes? He'll be lucky not to get the death penalty tbh.

It is about the hacking, not the publication, as far as crimes are concerned. That is clearly criminal (and should be). And the alleged rape, of course. And absconding from justice. That speedboat chap was given six months for absconding for only six months just this week. I imagine St Julian will get a year.
