Post Med school

I’m considering going to med school but something I’m unclear of is what you can do after graduating.
Can you get any kind of career without doing the foundation years and then specialising?
Do you get paid whilst you specialise?
Can you take breaks in between the stages?
Thanks

1. you have to do the two foundation years then you choose a speciality
2. yes, you get paid
3. I'm sure they give you breaks, holidays etc but I don't think its a lot lol
not to be rude or anything, but you've already posted about not wanting to do medicine....im v confused

Thanks as of rn I’m planning on bio, chem and psychology so hopefully that will lead me somewhere good. I keep trying to visit my school’s careers advisor but she never seems to be in so I’m sort of stuck with my own resources. Hope your revisings going well

1) You need to complete the Foundation Programme to be able to apply for specialty training. If you don't complete FY1 you can't gain full registration with the GMC.

2) Yes, of course, you're a practising doctor from the first day of FY1 - it's not a student role.

3) You get annual leave as per the junior doctors contract. You can take breaks at points between the different stages of training e.g. between finishing foundation years and starting specialty training, or you can apply for time out whilst you're in specialty training if it's justified. I think it’s going well although it’s always hard to tell if you’re really doing enough. Yes I’ve used UCAS before but decided to join here as some of my questions are a bit too unique for ucas😂

You're in the right place

The BMA website is a good place to look for info on doctors' pay, working hours, leave etc. Other useful resources include the TSR wiki and the NHS:
