I'm thinking of renting a house with some 30 year olds. Can i lie about my age?

I want to rent with a group of 30 year olds in a house. I'm 21 but I think they would feel more comfortable if I was 24-25 years old. If i say I am 24 will they find out i am lying?

I personally wouldn't lie, if you are going to be living with them then the truth will come out eventually and it will make the situation worse. Tell them now, and that way they can get used to it by the time you are living with them

thank you kindly for your reply, but i have considered the option of not lying about it.

i was interested to know if the housemates WILL find out (maybe through documentation or passport etc.) or if it's just possible it might slip

I've lived in plenty of house shares, with older professionals and students.
Nobody living with me has ever asked how old I am.
I was probably the younger person in most of the shares but because I was quiet, working and kept the place tidy- nobody even thought about it or guessed that I was a lot younger than many of them.

thank you :smile: so you didn't have to give your passport to them? surely a landlord has to know if you're here legally and over 18 etc?

This is strange

When I lived in a houseshare after about a week two of them asked my age

I find usually wherever I am after meeting someone new they will ask my age after a few days or like a week

If you socialise with your housemates you might go out to a club or something

A decent amount of clubs these days have those machines where they have to scan in your ID and take a photo
whilst taking the photo the machine will flash your age up on the screen
If you are with a group it is probable that at least one person will see this

If you lie about your age you won't be able to go clubbing with them because sooner or later the ID machines will end up outing you
I suggest you don’t lie, if you’re going to live with someone i’d want them to be honest with me about general things at the least - age. They’ll probably ask you your age too and your birthday and people too search up people on social media so I guess in this case lying won’t really do you any good 21 and 24 are both very different ages to 30 at the end of the day so if you’re trying to lie you might aswell say 28.

it will become obvious over time, then you will seem more immature for lying in the first place. Just tell them your actual age they'll probably be fine with it.

They're pretty standard in London Now

there standard all around the country i think, but tbf normally people don't stare at the screen to see everyones ID, they just try and go in the club.
gahhh. i regret wording the question like that. i should have asked if i'd need to hand over my birth certificate or my passport to my housemates as part of the renting process :frown:

Yes, if it is a proper tenancy , your landlord will ask you for a passport/drivers licence.

You only need to give the landlord identification documents. If the other tenants are not the landlord, then they will not need to see your documents.
Be honest. Your age is non-issue. They'd be far more uncomfortable when they inevitably find out they are living with a liar.

If they're in front of you [already got theirs done] and are waiting on you they will tend to

imo far too great a risk going to such a club if you've lied about your age as you only need one nosy housemate to be looking and it's all over

If they're in their 30s then they're most likely going to be grown-ups who got past caring about age a long time ago. They're probably used to treating other people like grown-ups regardless of peoples' age. They're far more likely to care about your maturity and behaviour, since that's what matters more when living with people. The fact you're worrying so much about age and thinking of lying about it is a bit childish and immature, so it'll be that which probably makes them uncomfortable, not your age.

It's the landlord or estate agent that has to keep a copy of your id, not housemates/flatmates.
I'm often able to get around this when it comes to rental accommodation because I've worked for a few estate agents and some buy to let landlords.
