As soon as the news broke, the Trumpophobe machine kicked into action. The BBC immediately proceeded to declare the visit 'controversial' and informed the nation that there would be 'angry crowds' in the streets, as they rushed around to find every anti-Trump's dogsbody and spokesman and thrust them in front of a mike. Obviously, that is not the role the State broadcaster is expected to adopt by right-thinking people but their inside knowledge of the anti-Trump derangement is empirical and they simply don't care about any sense of propriety anymore than the average lefty. It will be tumbleweed in the corridors at Broadcasting House on the day.

Serious question, what editorial line exactly do you think the BBC should take? Should it be representative of British public opinion? Should it be objective and based on fact and expertise? Should it always be "balanced"? These are all very different standards and not all of them can be met.

I think Britain should distance themselves from America, especially following Trump's retweeting of Britain first tweets. We should show that we have some backbone and not just follow America just to stay on their good side. I don't think this would ever happen under a Tory government or a new labour one but hey one can hope

Good question, what editorial line do I think the BBC should take when reporting Trump's visit? As with everything else they report, I'd like them to report facts without expressing a political leaning of any sort on anything. They are funded by everyone, both people who find the visit 'controversial' and those who think there is absolutely nothing controversial about it. For that reason, they are not meant to have opinions. The Guardian and the Mail can, the BBC can't by charter. They are not supposed to have a view on Austerity, for instance. They do.

It's easy to be objective and factual in reporting Trump's visit, he has been invited by the democratically elected government of this country in his capacity as POTUS and will be landing on whatever the date is. This country is hosting a democratically elected foreign dignitary, the US are an historical benefactor and a vital strategic partner. Where's the controversy, some people don't like the idea. So what, who cares?

For the BBC to be 'balanced', they shouldn't go too heavy on the sauce. It is balanced to acknowledge all the anti-Trump coalitions and give them a voice but the picture is exactly the same as with ER. There is an imbalance, when I say 'they create the narrative', that is based on the disproportionate amount of airtime they apportion to those movements by banging on the drum all day long at every hour that 'Trump's visit is controversial'. Radio 4 is where it's all at, all their flagship programmes making it the editorial line that 'Trump's visit is controversial'. Matter not of fact but opinion.
