Better to be naive and learning than to shut people who are genuinely interested in politics down for inexperience when everyone has to start somewhere.

Let me make something abundantly clear- no successful politician starts on TSR. Get out there. Get off here.

Anyone as far left as some of the posts I've seen on here are unequivocally naive

I believe in socialist ideals, I believe in a high taxation, regulation, nationalised industries, services and group responsibility.

Am I naive?

Not a very good definition... most parliamentarians are not trying to be celebrities.

ALERT! If you haven't yet registered to vote you need to do it now, today!

Deadline is midnight tonight (7th May).

Register here: https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote
You just need your NI number (ideally), and about 5 minutes of your time.

Do it now
if you don't do your civic duty as outlined above, understand you won't have a right to complain about the state of politics after this point.

If you are an EU citizen, it is imperative that you fill in a declaration before tonight, as well.

It's possible these will be accepted or available AT the polling stations but it's not guaranteed. It's a complete farce that EU citizens may be disenfranchised from something that directly affects them

I doubt it: the entire point of the form is to try to prevent EU citizens voting twice in the EP elections. Although given the recent farce surrounding the use of third party websites prompted by MPs being moreorless shut down by the Electoral Commission, a system like that may be implemented.

The chances of double voting are very slim in reality.

Some MPs are working on an EDM to to allow EU citizens to sign the declaration form at the polling station but yes it's not guaranteed at this stage :frown:

Slim, yes. But it nonetheless needs to be eliminated.

One the one hand signing a from at the polling station does help those who forget to do it online, but on the other hand could lead to other issues.

It's currently possible for someone (e.g. a student) to be registered at their home and another address (e.g. university digs). Nobody views that as a major problem and they are trusted not to vote twice.

Why should EU citizens be regarded with less trust?

Given its an EU election, I wouldn't think domestic mechanisms can have any effects on the constitutional nature of the election. Though, I am not party to the legal details.

I don’t think that should be possible either.

I would say the risk is marginally higher with the EP elections - especially in London: someone could vote at their local polling station and then quickly trek down to the consulate or embassy within a matter of minutes (although, in reality and I know, it is never as simply as that).

That being said, the risk is that bad and these are 'second-order' elections. The issue remains surrounding the legal aspect of such a course of action from the perspective of the EU.

Looking at it, we actually have one of the latest deadlines for EU citizen registration:

France (https://www.elections-europeennes-2019.eu/comment-voter/france) is the 31st of March.
Portugal (https://www.eleicoes-europeias.eu/como-votar/portugal) the 26th of March.
Belgium (https://www.elections-europeennes-2019.eu/comment-voter/belgique) the 28th of Feb.

There doesn't appear to be a mandated date.

Yep; confirmed - allowing EU citizens to register at that time would be in direct contravention of EU treaties

Article 22 of Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union:
Every citizen of the Union residing in a Member State of which he is not a national shall have the right to vote and to stand as a candidate at municipal elections in the Member State in which he resides, under the same conditions as nationals of that State

We would have to allow British citizens to 'fill in a form' on the day (although it isn't a direct similarity).

Incorrect, if you want to vote then you vote, if you do not vote you do not vote. Either way you have a right to complain about anything relating to the vote. I just wish people would stop seeing 'democracy' and the whole process as some thing with a near godlike status.

The gov has only confirmed TODAY that the UK's participation is actually going ahead, just hours before the deadline. It's a farce.
