I believe I've done one of these before a very long time ago.

Those who have any questions, dental or non-dental related, feel free to ask.

What advice would you give to a prospective Dentistry applicant?:holmes:
Are dentists doctors?

Hi, I have been told that I need braces and jaw surgery to fix my open/under bite. My dentist has referred me to the hospital already almost 3months. How can I quickly become on top of the waiting list for jaw surgery? Is their any way to speed up the waiting time?
Thanks in advance

Out of interest how old are you? (if you don't mind sharing) When I had treatment they wouldn't operate until I'd fully grown in case bones grew and moved further. My large under-bite (category C) was fixed using elastics on my braces for a year.
How do you deal with patients who have bad breath? Always thought you'd struggle not to gag...
I decided to not have root canal last year. My tooth is gone. Will my gum get infection?

A lot of people find Dentistry at dental school quite challenging and not easy. My advice would be, only apply for it if you are genuinely interested in studying it.
The other thing is, do not apply for it just for the money. Money will not grant you happiness, make sure you are applying for dentistry because you enjoy it.

You need excellent people skills and communication skills, you will spend most of your day talking to patients and colleagues and explaining treatment options to patients.

You need to be able to NOT buckle under pressure. There will be times where you will be running late and you need to stay calm otherwise your patient will lose confidence in you.

If you were very good at biology at A-levels then you will be good at the theory side of Dentistry and if you are very good at practical activities involving using your hands, then you will be very good at the practical side of dentistry.

The vacuum prevents the build up of saliva/water in the patients mouth and also sucks up any debris that is scaled.

Without a vacuum, the patient would feel the need to swallow/spit out every 5 seconds.

The term doctor can have two meanings.

1) Someone who has a PhD has completed a postgraduate degree and offered a new contribution to knowledge in the subject they studied.
2) Someone who is qualified to treat people

Dentists, are doctors by definition 2.
