Hi there I’m a first year OT student at Jordanstown!!

Our timetable is very full on with classes timetabled mostly 9-5 Tuesday to Friday with the exception of Wednesdays finishing early at 1pm. We got Tuesdays off in semester one which they said they never had before! Semester two was the same but with Monday’s off instead of Tuesdays. We had a one week orientation “placement” in mid January and we are just about to start our 4 week placement at the start of June so yes they do run into summer in first year!! Second year is full on as expected too I’ve heard however I think we only have a 6 week placement then in third year we have a 3 week role emerging placement in January and an 8 week around april! First year is kind of 50/50 with exams to coursework. We had practical exams early on at the end of semester 1 and a written anatomy exam at the start of semester 2 with coursework pieces handed in between the two. We are just about to do our second anatomy written exam and the rest of our practical exams over the next two weeks. Let me know if you want to know anything else!

You’re very welcome and thanks so much!! With regard to accommodation it really depends on where you’re from etc. There are people in my year who live up the north coast and travel every day and there are those who already live close to uni yet live in a house in Belfast. I’d recommend the halls in jordanstown only for this course only because sometimes we can get big 2/3 hour gaps between lectures if one gets cancelled or there’s nothing timetabled and those in halls are always so lucky as they can be back in their room in 5 minutes whereas if you lived down in Belfast it not only costs you to get back but also takes longer and sometimes the traffic on the M5 is super unpredictable so you mightn’t get to your lectures on time! It’s up to person choice though these are just my thoughts and speaking from experience of what those in my class have went through:smile:
im in the same situation I'm considering living in student roost housing and then travelling into jordanstown on the bus
Hey Nicole,

We would love to have you stay with us in September!

We find that a lot of students live in Belfast with us and take the train or bus to Jordanstown campus as it is not too long to travel.

If you have any questions about accommodation, we are always here to help!

Hi there! So far in first year we ended semester 1 with a manual muscle test (we had to learn about all the bones, ligaments and tendons etc in our hands and forearms and be able to test the strength /weakness of particular ones, for example, flexor digitorum superficialis) we also did a hoisting exam where we had to transfer a “patient” from either bed to chair or chair to bed with the hoist as well as do transfers with the assistance of 1 or 2 from the chair and back again. In semester two we just finished our practicals which entailed a lot more. We learnt all about how to measure patients for numerous walking aids (rolator/walking stick/zimmer frame etc) as well as how to wash a dress people who have different conditions (eg CVA or arthritis) and what adaptive equipment can help, we also learnt seating and pressure care (got examined on how to measure hip and knee flexion and extension) and finally examined on how to explain to patients how to independently transfer from their wheelchairs and back with the aid of sliding boards. We also get examined on other aspects such as communication etc. There’s so much!
