Incorrect details on insurance policy

A friend got insurance through a broker but upon getting the details from the insurer he realised that the marital status and a couple of other details are incorrect. He's not sure whether he should cancel the policy and get a new one or call the insurer and change the details.

Does he want the policy or not?
If he doesnt then he has to look into cancelling and whether he can.
If he doesnt then either contact the insurer direct or get the broker to chase it up.

He does indeed. The issue is he thinks the broker input the details incorrectly so is wondering whether the insurance company would take issue with this.

I'd hazard a guess that the broker knowingly used false details to obtain a cheaper quote, as many unscrupulous "brokers" do.

What should he do in this case?

I'd cancel the policy. If he were to ask the insurer to update the details, they'd clock on to what was going on and probably cancel it first.. and a cancellation is NOT something you want on your record.

They will, in the event of a claim, deny coverage if the details on the policy aren’t the same as your details. Obviously they won’t check your marriage certificate if you get into a fender bender but they will check addresses and other details.

Your best bet will be to ring them up and explain that there are incorrect details on the policy that you wish to correct. If you are still within 14 days of the policy start date, you could probably cancel with ease but that depends on your insurer and their internal policies

Cancelling would be quite costly for him at the moment, only the marital status is incorrect at the moment and some of the named drivers details. Would they definitely have this much of an issue?

Probably. Don't go to shady brokers in future.

Well, if the insurer deems the policy to be invalid in the event of a claim it'd be even more expensive, so as above he needs to get it sorted one way or the other.

If he just removes the named drivers and changes the marital status would they make a big deal out of it? He's happy to pay an increase in premium

Likely not. The marital status could be put down to an error when doing the quote and you could just say the named drivers won’t be driving the car so you don’t need them on there.

He's still within the 14 day cancellation period but there's a £200 charge for cancelling now that's why this is the advice I've given him

Yeah don’t do that if there’s no need to but removing the names drivers and marital status may increase his premium but an increased quote is better than no coverage in an accident.

The £200 charge is made up of admin fees + a charge for each day he’s had the insurance

You mentioned insurance broker in your original post. By broker do you mean one of those guys on Instagram or an actual broker who works for the insurance company

Would you agree changing the details is the best course of action?

It'd be a substantial change to the policy which will raise some eyebrows. Go down this route with severe caution.

Not really. He could say the marital status was a mistake and he doesn’t need the other drivers anyways so he wants them removed. Or he could just cancel the policy and take out another one w/ a £200 hit from his current policy

Substantial changes after only a few days nearly always cause questions to be asked.
