Should I study Biomedical Science or Cyber security??? HELP!!!!

Hey guys, im new here...

I am really stuck at what degree to study, I really enjoy biomedical science and Cyber security... and cant really seem to decide... I was wondering on if anyone has been stuck in deciding between these two? Any opinion and thoughts from people would be great!

I just feel so stuck in deciding but I think I am leading towards Cyber security..

I'm heavily involved in the Cyber Security industry and I can tell you that it's a fantastic field with high earnings, job security, good prospects and a range of roles you can specialise in. Though do keep in mind it is a relatively unheard of and niche degree.

These are two completely separate fields and honestly, you'd need to tell us more if you want us to help! :biggrin:

What I would say, is to choose the one you see yourself doing for a long, long amount of time.

Thank you so much for your message, I have been thinking carefully and decided that the IT Sector would be best for me and I enjoy it more compared to Biomedical Science. My priority lies around passion and work life balance!

I am now stuck in deciding between Cyber Security and Computer & Digital Forensics, the Computer and Digital Forensics look so so interesting but Im a bit worried about if its easy to get the employment in the field with the digital forensics degree. Im not too sure if I would still be able to enter the Cyber Security sector if I studied Digital Forensics, but its still computer security at the end of the day so I don't really know!

Hi, First of all BAE systems as mentioned by the other person do not offer Cyber apprenticeships. That being said, definitely apply to as many as you can!

Regarding digital forensics versus Cyber Security, you need to remember Forensics is a field OF Cyber Security. You can get into digital forensics with a cyber degree and vice versa, but the former is significantly easier. It's not too hard to get internships with police forces (local or regional units) for forensics - so pairing experience like that with a cyber degree would have you extremely employable in forensics as a graduate.

Forensics does, in my view seem more boring but especially working with the police there's a lot you can do! Presenting in courts, conducting investigations etc.

I recommend you do a Cyber Degree as it's more generalist. The degrees you've listed don't seem the best (imo). The ones you want are Warwick, Royal Holloway, Demontfort Uni, Uni of South Wales (named best Cyber Uni 2019) or any other NCSC certified courses. Make sure modules are strong and that industry engagement is frequent.

Also don't go for degree apprenticeships until you can identify whether you'd really like to work in the field! It can be demanding. But then again, no harm in applying. Please PM me if you have any more Qs, I'm in the Institute for Information Security professionals and received multiple Unconditionals for Cyber degrees :smile:

I'd also recommend taking a look at many degrees and their modules because the course is important! Look for a solid grounding in Computer Science and interesting topics in the field of Cyber! The best degrees tend to have a lot of work with industry (I've been told I should take a year in industry for experience) and UK Intelligence.

Wouldn't really recommend the univerisity of South Wales for Cyber as I attended the first full year, and it was absolutely a whole load of rubbish course. There was no cyber security content at all and the course content was kinda beating around the bush, meaning no focus on cyber topics at all.
