1) due to status frustration - link to Cohen and Merton. Not able to achieve goals through legitimate ways so form subculture to achieve goals through this.

Also, I don’t know if this is right. But due to labelling Howard Becker. After being labelled and self fulfilling prophecy people make form subcultures as they are marginalised from society. Not sure tho
Omg you wrote the exact same thing as me !!!

2) embarrassment. Link to women and domestic violence. Safety of family and keep family together. Don’t want to be blamed that rape was due to them e.g way they are dressed etc.

Mistrust of police- individuals no longer have strong attachments with police. Link to Hirschis binds of attachment - Social control theory. May feel police won’t do much.

nature of crime- victims of petty crime don’t want to go through the hassle if the crime isn’t worth it e.g theft of a coat.
3) literally was so stuck on this but I put;

- crime reduction technique is SCP linked to broken window theory. Putting locks on windows and cctv making people aware they are monitored go decrease opportunity for crime. Also making area less of a magnet for crime. Link to NYC TERMINAL etc. However not successful become doesn’t reduce crime , only displaces it to another area.

- I talked about prisons here. They are used as a psychological treatment where criminals are encouraged to change the way they think. Lacked freedom to be able to reflect on their own life. Rehabilitation is offered etc. British crime survey showed that 2/3 of criminals reoffend therefore prisons not successful as it makes it harder for them to adapt in society and go into employment so turn to crime again.
Sociological to explanations for level of female offending. Not going to lie I’m so shaky on the chivalry thesis so I left it and talked about the following.

- weakening of patriarchy” role of patriarchal society theory. How men have control over women at home ( nuclear family ), at work ( glass ceiling ) and in public ( 53% of women are scared to go out in the dark compared to 14% of men due to rape). All these aspects are slowly disappearing and women are breaking through glass ceiling , fmsilg structure changing. Both become similar therefore levels of offending should equal. Increased level of offending because women can take top jobs and could be involved in state and corporate crime. All this further evaluated.

- functionalist sex role theory. How males and females are socialised into roles. Girls bedroom culture and expressive emotional role - not linked to crime etc. Men are aggressive + testosterone . Link to breadwinner role and more dominant . Dobash and dobash found that domestic violence was due to men not satisfied with women’s roles, shows importance of roles in society. Evaluate that this idea could be seen as outdated , social change : look at equal pay act and sex discrim act , divorce reform 1969.

The liberation thesis- women’s position in society changing. Breaking thru to top jobs and staying without children. More opportunities for crime and offending. Develop more

Add on if you wrote other stuff too. I did just can’t remember 😭
5) it’s inevitable that research bias will occur . Peoples value and beliefs are innate and built in them and that can’t be removed for a piece of research.

Interpretivists don’t want objectivity as it doesn’t show true interpretations of society. Society should be studied in terms of cause and effect as well as how people interpret the world therefore researchers interpretations in of value and significant as part of research. This last point is probably 0 marks I couldn’t think of anything and scribbled it last minute hoping for the best!
Marxism to society today.

I think everyone loved this so I’m going to vaguely summarise what I wrote .

- Marx- capitalist system exploits w/c and benefits m/c. Develop idea more etc etc . Althusser false consciousness to prevent revolutions etc etc . Pearce talked about how sociol policies aimed to help w/c actually favoured m/c. E.g - health and safety means working class will work another oppressed day at work. Chambliss- property law making rich people stay rich and poor people poorer. All this can be properly developed.

Critics outdated item C. social mobility . People move between classes as more opportunities are provided through compensatory education and building up ladder. Ascribed and achieved status. People start from bottom and go up. Due to increase in access to be able to be social mobile.

Marx Feminist critic- gender divide is more oppressing As women have to deal with oppression of class and patriarchal. Emotional and expressive role takers of **** “. Warm bath theory . Dual and triple burden. ETC

Functionalist critic - Marxist ignores all benefits like social order and social cohesion. The functionalist perspective of society basically . Durkheim and all that Organic analogy !
I talked out about how they pick the topic they are intrested in from the start and that it can be to value laden. Linked this with James patrick considered to subjective. Then talk about intreptivsm for the second point

I put the same, I done embarrassment then said about domestic violence and abused 30 times before reporting. Then blame them selves like rape and what they wore then said fear if they knew attacker

I’m not sure if I answered this right. For society I related it to what we’ve learned so done like education, family then within taht compared the other views on it😫

1) Status Frustration and Differentual Environmental Oppertunities
2) Unaware they are victim (white collar crime), distrust in police (racism) , embaressment shame/may not be believed (sexual abuse)
3) Situational crime prevention only displaces crime and fails to address inequalities. Left realist crime prevention involves reducing social inequality through policies improving welfare, living standards, schooling, police relations etc but cannot fully address the free choice of criminals and their motivations linked to material deprivation and materialistic consumer culture where people will always seek to gain more through greed and crime will result. Hoping crime prevention is same as crime reduction.
4) Patriarchal control, differentual gendered socialistation, chivalry theory, liberation theory, gender role conformaty etc etc etc. Wrote a banging essay on this im hoping 30/30 baby!
5) Qualitative research can be subjective to the person involved and so may not be objective.
Some research can be hard to replicate and so impossable to check reliablity and so may not be objective.(covert)
6) I wrote all I knew about the marxist perspective. Ideological state aparatus, false consiousness etc
(edited 4 years ago)
Q1. Labelling theory and poverty. Labelling could lead to self fulfilling prophecy meaning that they will create their own subcultures and poverty meaning that they steal and promote deviant behaviour and hang with their own subcultures, and somehow I linked it to the question with some examples. Q2. Fear, Might not consider a serious type of crime and might not feel that the social agents are able to help them. Explained it, with examples and linked back to the question.Q3. Zero Tolerance policy: rational choice they may consider the reward of their committed crime much more bigger than the punishment (warnings) and adaption to the new environment: displacement. Q4. Talked about the rised stats of female offending, chivalry thesis, patriarchal society, how media potrays woman and how women commit crime, in order to show off their masculinity. Also wrote about how female get harsh punishments than men, when talking about serious type of crimes eg. rapeQ5. Here I mixed the question with to many explanations: A03 of Durkheim's suicide study ( no cause and no effect), no cause and no effect, how objectivity uses quantitative data, compared to qualitative data, talked about scientifical methods and etc (cant remember)Q6. Kept linking to the item, ideological state apparatus, education (how world of education prepares children for work, eg. punctuality), social inequality, gave soo many examples, Althusser, Karl, criticised Marxists for being too deterministic and having no free will, does not consider ethnicity and gender differences, overlooks difference between m/c and w/c, etc (cant remember)

SOMEONE HELP ME! I'm really worried about the 10 marker for crime as I didn't mention left/right realism(apart from maybe once for criticism).
Instead, I thought stops and searches is a crime prevention strategy and spoke about how that doesn't stop crime & gave Phillips & Bowling's study of ethnic m being overly stopped and searched and said how stops & searches don't work because they still end up committing more crime?
& I don't even remember what I wrote for the 2nd point but it had nothing to do with l/r realism. SOMEONE put my mind at ease, am I still going to get marks despite not mentioning l&r realism? I'm so worried now...

this point is perfectly valid and should be credited, so long as you referred to a hook.

Yup I did I used the point in the item where it said police and courts hold stereotypes or assumptions of certain groups, then spoke about it.
I really cant remember what I wrote for the 2nd point but am I going to get penalised for not writing about l/r realism. How many marks do u reckon I would get?
Also for the Marxism essay, I didn't reference neo-marxism as I completely forgot about it! wasn't expecting Marxism to come up as the 20 marker was very shocked.

if you can correctly justify your answer to the question and relate it to the hook, its fine. its not going to solely accept answers regarding realism.

neo-marxism is a good thing to bring up, and im not sure how much they weight it. you may be able to get a good mark on it by just referring to traditional marxism if you link it back every time to whether its relevant to todays society. i couldnt tell you whether this will keep you out of the top mark band, though.
