After visiting an airport I am so envious of Pilots I am looking to how to be one !

I am 27, I was visiting John Lennon Airport in Liverpool the other day as I want to get my passport soon and travel.
I am 27 and have zero experience with actually flying a plane myself.

When I got home from the airport I felt so envious of the Pilot's and how lucky they are, while I was at home they would be preparing to fly away from the airport up into the clouds and somewhere hot and exotic.

I have been looking on the internet for information no how one would become a Pilot for commercial airlines and I got mixed reviews.

what do you think ? thanks

I recommend actually getting some flight experience before you commit to this career. It costs a lot per lesson, but could pay off you fall in love with flying.

Also, keep in mind that pilots don't necessarily get the chance to enjoy the places they fly passengers to, as they are doing a job and therefore can't take holidays at every destination. Most likely they'd stay close to/in the airport until their next flight.

Make sure you want to get into flying for the right reasons not just because you think it sounds ‘cool’ to call yourself a pilot.

The training is long, hard and very expensive. It will soon weed out those that have a real passion and those that do not.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a fantastic career in many respects, great fun, well paid, exciting. But it can also be a pain in the arse with very early starts, night flights, standbys and often living out of a suitcase.

Find your local flying school and sign up for a trial lesson to see if it’s really something you’d like to peruse.

I met some trainee pilots in Southampton. Google that to find the course and check the requirements. My son learnt to fly a Cessna, and even back then the lessons were about £140 each. Plus you have to learn about airport law. Plus you can never really relax, whether taking off, landing or when you’re up in the air.

If you are really interested I would suggest you look into it.

I would imagine you would need some academic qualifications as well?

Not really.

Only in the sense that it demonstrates you're a strong candidate, but there's no requirement to be a degree holder.

I can remember a German GCSE question, where a pilot said just that! My son M... was considering becoming a pilot, and was almost ready to fly solo, when this put him off. That and the difficulty of getting a job after your training (his flying trainer had many flying hours under his belt but still unable to secure employment). However he was in his thirties. Maybe you need to start younger.

Maybe OP could start with the RAF? Surely they would teach him to fly?

Joining the RAF to learn how to fly for an airline is like trying to join an F1 team to pass your driving test.

Absolutely DO NOT DO IT if your ambition is airline pilot.

If you’re really serious about it then you’d have the drive and passion to figure it out yourself.

Find a flying school, take a lesson and then take it from there if you’re still interested. Figure out if you’d rather go integrated or modular and then work your arse off.
