Kenya flight 'stowaway' body found in Clapham garden

A suspected stowaway who is believed to have fallen from the landing gear of a flight into Heathrow Airport has been found dead in a London garden.
The body - believed to be that of a man - was found in Offerton Road, Clapham just before 15:40 BST on Sunday.

Police said it was thought the individual fell from a Kenya Airways flight from Nairobi.

A neighbour said the body fell a metre away from a resident who had been sunbathing in the garden.

Knew how to make a good first impression.
Poor guy. Nothing demonstrates the extremes in wealth and wellbeing between a country like ours and a country like Kenya that gives rise to the levels of desperation that drives someone to take such a crazy risk to try to get to us.

The world needs to be fairer and more caring.
What is surprising about cases like this is that as many as 25% of stowaways do actually survive. Only just, and in poor condition, but they occasionally do survive. Often it is becasue the plane has had a problem and flown lower than planned. It has to be the craziest means of attempted travel anywhere.

There ought to be a sign in large letters inside the undercarriage bays with the statistics of survival and the details of how you die.

I imagine by the time you've read it, you're pretty much locked in there. Unless there's an intercom with the pilot: "I made a mistake, sir."

One might imagine that CCTV could be installed in such hidey holes very cheaply.
So Nairobi needs to up its security then.

They were probably complicit.
So far, TSR is responding to this awful thing by:

- blaming the Kenyans
- mocking what happened
- discussing the technicalities of hiding in aircraft landing gear as if great authorities on the subject
- generally being indifferent to the suffering involved

Well done everyone.

Of course, if this was a white european middle class person plunging to their deaths..... but shall we not go there?

And so far you have pretended you know why the person stowed themselves aboard an aeroplane and their life story. Even though the BBC found it difficult to even identify the body's sex. You should go into journalism as you'll get right to the heart of the issue without even conducting an investigation.

If it was a white middle class person you would be mocking their stupidity along with the rest of us, don't deny it. But when it's a sacred non-white, then it's suddenly out of bounds for some reason. Why?

You, as is so typical on the left, are exihibiting the racism of low expectations. You first make the assumption that Kenya and all of Africa is just wall to wall, inescapable poverty and suffering (it's not, Kenya as it happens has a very large and rapidly growing middle class, the majority of whom live perfectly normal, healthy and peaceful lives). You speak as though this individual had no agency over his own actions and assume that he must have been living in desperate poverty (how do you know that? The bottom line is you don't. You have no idea what his personal situation was, nor his motivation for doing this very stupid act which ultimately cost him his life).

It isn't a rich country just because it has a middle class. It ranks very low compared to Europe and something like 30% of girls in the main cities are or have been involved in prostitution to try to make money for poor families. It has huge child labour and a large number of essentially destitute people.

I don't know he was living in desperate poverty, but it's not a normal act and there is zero justification for mocking him or the circumstances, which is what some in this thread are doing, or for pretending they know just what happened, when they don't, or discussing it as if it's some kind of abstract aviation problem rather than what it so clearly is, another example of the desperation of economic and social circumstances around the world.

It's okay to be critical of Kenyan Airlines though, it's obvious to anyone that they either, have poor security checks or were complicit in this. Either way, it's alarming that this happened full stop. An investigation needs to take place asap.

Of course it is shocking that someone can access a large civil aircraft there and climb into it, security is clearly lax and international terrorists can probably plant bombs in planes there with little difficulty.

However, we should see this against a background of massive corruption in the country (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corruption_in_Kenya) and arms corporations doing huge business there, not least British ones. Across Africa, government spending is heavily devoted to the enrichment of the families and friends of the ruling parties and to weapons purchases. These are not accidents - they are conditions encouraged by the global powers and their corporate interests - Africa is a lucrative source of raw materials and foodstuffs and an exploitative relationship continues between us and Africa in many ways.

So it's perhaps not too surprising they don't maintain security properly at their main airport.

the body is surprisingly resilient in extreme cold, oxygen deprivation aside.

To be honest they should simply have better security at the airport. It is attrocious that anyold yahoo can simply hop into a passenger jet. If this man had been of a more devious nature it could have been another Lockerbie or Metrojet.

It is but most of those who survive are just very, very lucky - the plane flies low to avoid a storm, for instance. The strong odds are that whoever attempts this dies, from crush injuries caused by the undercarriage, falling out, freezing, suffocating, having deflated lungs.
