Bedwetting... any advice

Hi, my little bro is 8 and still wets his bed every night. My mum seems to think he will just grow out of it but I am really embarrassed for him and think more could be done to help him stay dry. He wore nappies to bed until he got too big for them last year and now wears those pull up nappy pants. I think they make him lazy and don't train him to wake up bur my parents won't let him try without them.

I use to get him ready for bed and last year when putting his nappy on I asked him if he wpuld try going to sleep without one and he said yes, but my parents said he wasn't ready to sleep without one.

Did anyone wet the bed until this age and do you havr any advice? Should he be wearing the nappy pants?

He can't go on any sleepovers and I think he is embarrassed that other children his age don't wet the bed/wear nappies.

He's at the age where a GP will take it seriously rather than saying 'wait it out' - so it's worthwhile taking him and seeing what they suggest. Bedwetting alarms are supposed to be a better alternative to nappies as children get older. One of my friends as a kid used this instead to wake her up (she slept at my house every weekend). There are also medications that can be prescribed.

He'll eventually grow out of it. It's not uncommon for children to still wet their bed at age 8.

Thanks I suggested waking him up in the night a while ago but they said it will disturb his sleep and make him tired for school, which is understandable I guess but now it's the holidays maybe they will try it.

I think an alarm is a good idea. His nappies are expensive so buying one could save a lot of money in the long term.

I will ask if they have taken him to the GP but I feel like they don't see it as a problem worth addressing.
I wet my bed at 12 years old, got my ass whooped and never again...

I'd just stop with the nappies, it seems to be something that allows him to know that he's able to do it without any consequences
Last time I recall wetting my bed was when I was 9 and I came out just fine. Your brother's good, but I recommend stopping the nappies. Wrap a plastic mattress cover between the mattress and fabric cover and let him feel the discomfort of soiling his clothes. He will learn naturally.

Thanks, I agree about his nappies but don't know if my parents will let him go to bed without one on. They seem to think as long as his bed and pjs aren't wet its not a problem, but it's weird that he still wears them and they are subconsciously letting him think it's ok to pee in his sleep. If he were to feel wet it might help him stop.
I wet the bed until I was 10 and wore nappies for most of the time (much to my sisters amusement) so your brother is fine. The nappies are not ideal but its probably better than him waking up in a wet bed. Just let him grow out of it like I did. They make nappies up to age 13 for this reason I think.
The nappies are probably not helping him because they absorbe all the wee and he doesn't feel wet. It may sound harsh but take away the nappies and he might learn to stay dry.
Try to get him to go for a wee every night before bed - even if he doesn't think he needs it, it's worth a try. Also try to avoid giving him any drinks before bed.

A friend of mine did until about 7. Their parents took them to a doctor who recommended a specialist. The advice was to not have any fluids for about 3 hours before bed (friend can’t remember exact time) and keep a record of wet vs dry nights. Get one of those plastic mattress covers for the bed if he doesn’t have one already and that will make the clear up easier. He will grow out of it eventually.

I hope so! Glad he is clearly not alone. I just hope he grows out of it before it becomes really embarrassing for him

I think at this stage it’s not too bad, people outside of the immediate family never need to know about it, so any embarrassment he feels won’t be that bad.

What could be embarrassing, as was the case for my friend, is to have family members who like to chat about it and bring it up as a funny anecdote (hence how I know all about it). Don’t do this and all will be fine.

Thanks, he was very upset that his cousin who is only 4 was out of nappies when family came round and stayed.

Haha I will save the funny anecdote about his extended life in pampers until he is 18

It's probably best to avoid drinks for at least an hours before bed. Also, have your parents thought about trying bed pads rather than nappies? They would still protect the bed but would allow him to recognise that he is wet and hopefully learn to wake up. I think they are also cheaper than nappies.

He already has waterproof sheet in case his nappies leak (not often) but I will ask about just using bed pads. The thing is they are really fine with him just staying in nappies until he grows out of it so they often come up with a reason to just keep him in them.
So last night he didn't have anything to drink before bed and his nappy was definetly less wet this morning. We were going to see how it would be if he didn't have anything to drink 3 hours before bed but because of the heat my parents are letting him drink whatever.
I wet the bed intermittently until I was about 12, and I wore nappies if I knew I was going through a rough patch. I was also bullied quite a lot at school, and that was a triggering factor. But I grew out of it eventually.
