DSA and laptops

In September I will start as a first year student at Nottingham Trent and will be recieveing DSA for my dyslexia (or will be after I've submitted my evidence). I've been told it's likely I'll be offered a laptop for my studies but I just wondered if anyone knows what kind of laptop I might recieve?

The only reason I really need the laptop is as my handwriting is illegible so I need to be able to type and also use speech-to-text (and of course for writing up work etc). I've seen a lot of vaugue answers but just wondered if anyone had more recent experiance of what they have recieved for similar reasons.

I've seen similar questions knocking about a lot but non quite answer my question.

How do i sort out my DSA.I will be an undergrad in september. At school i had extra time in exams and learning support help for my moderate learning difficulty. However, i do not have proof of any disability. How do i go on about it?

Who diagnosed you? You generally need something from an educational psychologist or an appropriately qualified specialist teacher.

I don’t have an actual clue. I just knew I had academic problems which were addressed by my teachers at school beforehand I was like 6. Hence why the extra time and support. Thanks for your reply and how do get a psychologist? Do I just find one and book an appointment? Do you what what they will do or ask me?

You can go private with an educational psychologist and then they ll do reading tests, memory tests, writing tests that sort of thing. So you ve not been told which learning difficulty it is you have?

I had extra time in high school too, however, when I came to uni, my issues were picked up on by a tutor and therefore, an educational psychologist met with me to diagnose my learning difficulties.

However, what I should have done and I think you should do, is contact the uni's student support and well-being team and inform them of your learning difficulties. Then, they will be able to make you an appointment and get support in place for you ready for September!

I received a laptop with specialist equipment whilst I was a student as I too have dyslexia.

The laptop I received was an Acer laptop with text-to-speech and speech to text software (the scanner and printer they gave me did this- which will definitely be necessary for you due to your handwriting). It also had software that allowed you to get organised and plan assignments. I also had 1:1 support from a tutor.

Also how much is the DSA per instalment or it depends on your situation?

And, instead of waiting till september to get the help i need, i am wondering if i could go to the doctor and see if he could refer me to an educational psychologist to speed things up before september? what do you think?

My 1:1 tutor was very friendly. I had X amount of hours and could use them when and how I wanted too. So for example, during exam season, I would ask her to meet with me twice weekly to help me get organised. From then onwards, I would usually meet with her once a week to help me keep on top of my work and give me motivation and guidance to do it. Some weeks if I did not feel that I needed to see her, I just wouldn't book in an appointment with her.

You could reach out to a private educational psychologist, but these reports can cost up to £400. So, I would really stress on contacting the university you wish to attend and get things put in place now, rather than waiting until September. If you are unsure about what uni you want to attend, once you have decided, it never too late to contact the uni and get things set up now.

I did not directly receive DSA, I received the funding through resources i.e. laptop, scanner/printer, and tutor.

There will be lots of options for Laptop, I got mine a few months ago. I contributed £200 and got a Lenovo model that does the trick and has specialist software on as people mentioned. Models Range from a pretty standard model to macbooks, gaming laptops etc. They all involve some sort of contribution, with the basic one £200 contribution and the mac like a £600-700 contribution. Hope that helps a bit!
