Don't question the title :colonhash:

This is an unconventional GYG with no pretty banners, details or regular updates.

It will basically be me struggling through my Masters and barely surviving and glamming up my PhD application on the side. It will have more of my mental breakdowns and less of achievements. Don’t tune in for your sake.

Hi! I am Mya Mya :hi: I just turned 23 and will be starting my PG soon. This is my attempt to keep myself motivated and have a safe space to vent when the going gets tough :h:

Some informative information about me:
Graduated with an Economics degree in 2018
Worked for a year
Pursuing Masters in Education Policy
Wish to do my PhD in Education Philosophy starting 2021

My goals:
1. Passing all my courses would be a great start! Seriously though, I wish to graduate first class.
2. Get a part-time job or an internship on my CV
3. Impress my professors to get a research assistantship and hopefully get published.
4. Decide on the schools and the programs I wish to apply to.
5. This is it so far. I’ll add more as I go along!

Warning: I have been called odd oftentimes by my friends and I will mostly be talking to myself so stay away if you don’t like crazy. Updates will be sporadic at best and will leave you confused most times.

Disclaimer: This is not an AMA. Feel free to ask questions but don’t expect answers.

I have two years to get my life on track and become awesome. Let’s get it! :woohoo:

How come you switched from Econ to Education?

How come you switched from Econ to Education?

Hi Bernie Bro!

It's not really a switch as much as it is a specialisation imo. I wanted to go into the social development sector since the very beginning so studying Economics seemed like the right choice. And working in different sectors, I found education to be the most fruitful and interesting to me so I hope to make a career in that with close ties to Economics and Politics.

Sounds like you have it all mapped out

PS. One more question -- since you mentioned it -- has studying economics and politics helped you feel the bern?

Aug 12, 2019

The program coordinator emailed us oPtiOnaL summer readings on July 7th and I have been trying to get around to them but haven't succeeded yet
They are 19 books. Not articles but BOOKS. University hasn't even started yet and I am already behind :bricks:

Going to start with one of the following (since they seem the least boring of them all)

Encountering Development: The Making and Unmaking of the Third World (1995) Arturo Escobar
OR
The End of Poverty: Economic Possibilities for Our Time (2005). Jeffery Sachs

The selection will be based on the most effective, efficient and productive method, practised by our late ancestors that hath always led them to success :adore:

Spoiler

So Escobar takes the win :woo:

Going to start Encountering Development today. It's not very long. 6 chapters. 226 pages. I can do it :dumbells:

Let's get it!!
If it's not evident already, "let's get it" is my phrase for life.
In the Preface, the author says that he is taking a "poststructuralist" approach, which basically means that he is going to be discursive and analyse the theories of the culture.

I can get on with that :u:
So there is a surprise  The approach will also be "anthropological". Oh Escobar, couldn't you keep things simple??
Yh sorry. I am going to stop live commenting on the progress of the book and actually just get to reading :ciao:
Question: Can one spam their own thread? :hmmmm:

Because I strongly feel I am doing that :hide:

Because I strongly feel I am doing that :hide:

Nevermind. If I can't spam my own thread then do I really have any rights? :curious:
I can already see that this is the reason I am going to fail at life. I can't even concentrate on a book.

Is this what a year of work does to you? You forget how to study?
fml
Finished the Preface!

tbh just skipped through the rest since the author spent PAGES thanking a ton of people.

Now, Ch 1 - Development and Anthropology of Modernity
I fear this thread is turning into a solo book reading club.
