6 √56 = 12 √14

Step by step solution

√56 can be simplified to √14 and √4 because 14 x 4 = 56

But remember √4 = 2

So it’s 2 √14

You then take the 6 and put it with 2 √14

This gives you (6) 2 √14

You then multiply the 6 by 2 to give 12

This gives you 12 √14

Hope this made sense! Let me know if you are confused on anything.

No, you find the highest square factor of 56, in this case 4, so that you can simplify it’s surd

When you say work out surds, this isn't a typical question at GCSE, it is often simplify or rationalise a surd. To simplify surds it is often breaking them up into numbers that can be square rooted, in terms of √56 this can't be broken down into sqaurerootable numbers and therefore you can't do anything with 6√56 there must be another part to the question.
