Many reasons why it's wasn't talked about:
1) This isn't really a thing countries like Brazil want to publicise, so wouldn't want to report to as much as the western world would.
2) This rate of deforestation is pretty normal for Brazil if you look at trends, you'll see that compared to how much they cut down of the amazon it's pretty insigificant

Whether the Amazon is literally the lungs of the planet or not, I think we can agree it's not only diatoms that give us the oxygen we breathe, and the rainforest does make an important contribution. And besides that, precious resource because of the biodiversity.

It definitely is news though, because it's not on fire, it's being burnt down. Bolsonaro cut pretty much all protections for it and campaigned on opening it up for development, and he's now turning a blind eye to it being burnt down to free the land up for agriculture. This isn't wildfires and an environmental phenomenon, this is arson encouraged by an outright dangerous leader.

We're in an increasingly dangerous global situation. There are now extensive forest fires in Siberia, Alaska and Canada as well as massive deforestation in all of the tropical countries. We are facing not just global warming but extinction.

The petty nationalism of Bolsonaro is a sad reflection of the way fearful voters reach for simplistic-sounding solutions, but his government are only increasing the pain the world is suffering.

We need intelligent, thoughtful leaders who are willing to take global warming and biodiversity collapse seriously at the same time as addressing the poverty and precariousness that dogs so many working people's lives under advanced extreme capitalism.

Brexit has crippled our country's ability to take a stand on these issues. Yes, sadly we won't be joining Ireland and France, who are now demanding that the Mercosur-EU trade deal be cancelled until there is firm evidence that the Bolsanaro government are going to take the forest burning seriously.

Post-Brexit Britain looks increasingly set to be a rogue state itself.

Below average in a few states, well above average in a couple of them. In those couple of states, oddly concentrated along transportation corridors in those states, near land that agriculture has recently expanded in to. Almost like it's still deliberately being burnt down because the idea of some economic prosperity is more important than the survival of humanity.
