better luck next time, soup! yr13 gyg

Hello! You may have seen from my other gyg (epic stress time) that my AS results didn't go to plan - CDEU, subject specifics in next post. I won't lie, I was quite upset about it.

But I am starting year 13 in September, and if I spend the whole year feeling sad about results day, then how will I meet any offers I get? I'm playing the "get soup.bucket into uni" game and I aim to be more successful this time.

[Edit 16/08/19]
I originally planned to start this on the first day of timetabled lessons, but I realised I need to get myself somewhat familiar with the AS content again so I'm starting early haha

Let's do it

AS Levels:

Comp Sci: C
Maths: D
Further Maths: E
Physics: U (big rip)

I will be dropping physics, and possibly replacing fm with AS Chemistry if my teachers don't approve of me continuing. Hopefully things go well!

First day of study since my AS results - it's not going to be much, but at least it's something done.
Today, I need to: ([X] on completed tasks)

Rewrite some of my AS Comp 1 notes on paper [X]

Browse universities with lower requirement grades [X]

Work on my Personal Statement Draft to submit via Unifrog on Monday [X]

Other than that, I'm basically free all day, so unless something pops up, it'll be very much achievable to complete.
I'm planning to take it a bit easier before the school year starts, just recapping on AS and uni application stuff.

18/08/19 - 19/08/19

So, today is the day before my personal statement draft deadline - I've got nothing good to write about but I'll try and stretch it to at least 3300 characters (Unifrog minimum). My last 2 weeks of my work placement start tomorrow, so that's 8 work days left, then on the 3rd of September I have my first induction day in year 13. So that's alright.
Today, I need to: ([X] on completed tasks)

Complete my personal statement draft and send it to my form teacher via unifrog [--]

Practice questions on logarithms and exponentials for AS maths [X]

Practice questions on matrices and series for AS further maths [X]

Today is a bit more content practice than yesterday, I need to get up to scratch with AS content again if I want increase my grades next year. If I don't I'll be trying to learn new content on a weaker foundation, which is not good.

20/08/19 - 21/08/19

Today is exactly 2 weeks (14 days)/13 days until my first induction day as a y13 student, and 20/19 days until my first timetabled lessons - so I've got to get on with my revision. I also have 7/6 (including today) workdays to go at my placement before I'll have to leave. So that's fun, the countdown has started.
Today, I need to ([X] for completed tasks):

Work on my Computer Science project introduction [X]

Practice questions on Chi Squared for Further Stats [X]

23/08/19
So, took a bit of a day off from studying yesterday, so no update - Today I will be doing some AS revision, as well as some Comp Sci project work, considering that I'm off work. I have exactly 1 work week left of my placement (4 days for me) and the week after that I start school again (3rd September). The day before that I should be getting a phone call about whether or not I can do further maths at A2, considering my grade.
Anyways, today I need to: ([X] on completed tasks)

Further research into the topic of my CS project [X]

AS Maths: Binomial expansion and Differentiation/Integration questions [X]

That's all I have originally planned, I might edit more in if I have the time or want to do it. Overall my work experience has been pretty good so far. I'm very lucky to have gotten it in the first place, and although I'm still not sure about what I want to pursue within computer science, it was a good experience to have. The subject is incredibly vast and hopefully I will find what I would want to do.

I'm applying for general Comp Sci and not a specialisation anyway, so I guess I have time.

[Edit]
Tomorrow I will have to come in to college to finish my re-enrolment (AKA being told whether or not I do fm for A2) and I'm absolutely bricking it tbh. Hopefully things go well though, and I'll find a way out of this situation. I'll post about what the decision is, but other than that, I won't be updating the gyg until 3rd Sept when I start year 13
(edited 4 years ago)
Somehow there's been an issue with me editing my last post but hope this goes through haha

So yeah, I've been called to go to my sixth form to complete my re-enrolment into year 13 - AKA being told whether or not I can do fm this coming year, so naturally I'm bricking it. Hopefully things go well, I'll post the decision after it's done, but then after that I don't think I will update this gyg until I've started the year - so 3rd Sept.

Nws 😂
epic enrolment update - 02/09/19

I'm finally enrolled in my sixth form for year 13, and I've been allowed to attend A2 Further Maths lessons and do AS Chemistry as a bit of a backup subject. Then, I'll have up until the end of October to ultimately decide between the two of them. It's a good middle because I can still do the subject I wanted to do, but if I find I'm really struggling in it then I can drop it and do Chemistry instead. But atm I'm hoping it'll end up with me dropping Chem (I kinda want 3 full A levels) but we'll see how it goes. First induction day tomorrow as a year 13 student.

The summer went by quite quickly I think haha
i agree, summer has flown by
im sure you'll smash it this year, all the best

First day back at sixth form! Today was induction day 1/2, we basically just did some uni application stuff and found out our timetables were not yet printed due to people still being in the process of enrolment so subject blocks were subject to change (laugh track). Other than that it was a pretty useless day back at college - only having my first lessons tomorrow, and then I'm off Thursday and Friday for the year 12 induction days.

So yeah, that's pretty much it.

2nd and final induction day! Today went pretty good, had my first lesson for maths, further maths, and computer science (AS chemistry is a year 12 subject and so not on the year 13 induction days), and as it turns out my only frees are when most of my friends have lessons! It's not great atm, but maybe it'll inspire me to study harder in my frees instead of socialising lol
So what I did today:

Free:
Revised (or at least tried to revise) roots of polynomials for AS further maths. I did a few questions then got distracted eventually, it's not amazing but it's not nothing at the very least.

Maths:
Review questions on trig from the textbook - I have to finish the remaining by my first lesson back next week, which is Monday. It was ok except for the fact I forgot a formula here and there, but if I have a look back to it then I should be fine with them.

Further Maths:
We were given a folder for the core pure that we will be doing, and next week we should start on A2 complex numbers. We have a separate teacher for fm now which is a change from AS where we had the same teacher for maths and fm. For that I will have to look over my AS pure paper and write down the questions I would like to have a look over. From what I have seen by looking over some questions in class, I will find lots of stupid mistakes and be frustrated, but it just be like that.

Free 2:
Just chilled here. Further maths overran by about 20mins-30mins so I really had half a free.

Computer Science:
We talked about how we were going to study and also got to ask about my comp 3 project. Got to leave 30mins early, so basically half a lesson. For that I need to buy a ringbinder as our teacher has decided to check them weekly to ensure we are re-writing our notes and making sure we understand them.

To do by Monday: ([X] when completed)

Complete maths questions [X]

Look over further maths pure paper and list weaker questions [X]

Purchase ringbinder for computer science [X] (as it turns out I already had one so I just organised it)

Complete personal statement to print out on Monday [--]

Complete CS project introduction and put on memory stick [X]

Continue daily revision (shown in later posts) [X]

It's a bit of a long post compared to the others lol but I actually had lessons.

It's a day off for me today (year 12 induction) and I don't think there's anything my family's planning to do, but in case something comes up I think it'd be better to get the revision for today done and out of the way.

Today's revision: ([X] when completed)

AS FM Matrix questions [X]

AS Maths Trigonometry and Binomial Expansion practice [X]

Also to do off the week list today:

Complete maths questions

Today should be the final day of year 12 inductions (it's Friday), and so after that I have 2 more days off and then I'm back to timetabled lessons for the 9th. I have lessons right away instead of the double free I would have on a Monday, but it should be fine considering I aim to do more work on a weekend. Also I'm aiming to have the personal statement draft and CS project introduction done, which could take a while depending on certain things, like how much I can write about my extracurriculars, as well as how much research I do around the project.

Today's revision: ([X] when completed)

Maths Trig Revision [X]

FM A2 Complex Numbers 1.2 [X]

Also to do off the week list today:

Complete CS project introduction

I was not able to quite complete writing the introduction to the project today (I got a bit caught up in the research element of it) and so hope to finish that tomorrow, as well as writing my personal statement draft. Due to the potentially time consuming nature of both activities, my subject revision might be a bit less - but I still aim to get work done.

Not that much happened so far today, there's some work being done around the house so there's dust everywhere. I managed to get an (absolutely awful but existent) introduction for my CS project done. I'm hoping to get some feedback on it next week so I can get it right and then get on with the rest of the project. So for the rest of today and tomorrow I have my first draft of the personal statement to write and print out, as well as my ongoing daily revision. I simultaneously can't wait to have my first proper lessons of the year next week, and also unsure as to how I'll feel about my Monday starting off with a double lesson with year 12s

Anyways, that's enough rambling for today
(edited 4 years ago)
08/09/19
Ok, so I will have my first proper timetable day tomorrow. I am somewhat looking forward to it - I haven't been in school since Wednesday, and quite frankly, I've had enough weekend for now. A little bit unsure about how I feel starting off my week sat with y12s, but if it be like that, then it do be like that.
Anyways, I guess that's all my thoughts for today, here's my intended revision for today: ([X] when completed)

More A2 FM Complex Numbers Study [X]

A2 Comp Sci project research [X]

Also I'm considering a gap year so in case I can't do further work experience with the company I did work at over the summer, I'm going to look at further extracurriculars/work experience/whatever I could do over the course of a year. I also need to get a good part of my Personal Statement draft written today so I can have it printed out on Monday to give to my form teacher on Tuesday.

Also I've had a look at other people's GYGs, and they tend to tag people on their tag list on their later posts? I was not aware of this - I will try it out in this post and I'm sorry if it's not the right thing to do oops

1st timetable day of year 13! Bus was absolutely stuffed this morning, but hopefully that'll be sorted as the bus company sent a smaller bus than what was necessary. My backpack got damaged in the dryer so that's no fun. I also got a fair bit of homework, including basically going through my AS further maths pure paper again (yikes) and going over some GCSE chemistry.

Double Chem:
It was ok, I didn't end up hating the year 12s in my class like I thought I would - it was the ones on the bus I found annoying, and I also recognised one person from my secondary school. We went over basic stuff like lab safety/expectations for lessons, as well as being given an exercise book, a textbook (borrowed), and a calendar of what content we cover each week, including assessments and practicals (called PAGs - I do OCR A Chem). So I think it'll be a decent start to the week. So for this I need to get the introduction to A level chemistry booklet finished for the next lesson tomorrow.

Maths:
Basically recapped differentiation,as well as having a bit of a look at the chain rule. Pretty uneventful, the seats also moved around and classes may be changed to make for a more even split.

Further Maths:
An interesting lesson - we looked over the paper, which I forgot to bring in. For some reason my brain decided 5 times 2 is 20 and I claimed this was the case out loud in front of my fm teacher - big yikes. So yeah, that was fun. My teacher brought us food and gave us homework, which, as it says above, is to basically go through the AS pure paper again. I aim to do some questions today and the rest tomorrow.

I also need to get a decent way through this personal statement draft.
