This is what out of touch elites do. Just like the super rich luvvies who scream about the environment get about on private jets and champagne socialists send their sprogs to private schools. The ‘elite’ are a disgrace.

Feel like this one story kind of epitomises the entire Conservative Party. One rule for them and their rich mates, another for everyone else.

Yes, I remember that time that a Conservative Government restricted champagne drinking solely to their "mates" and banned it for everyone else.

The Conservative Party are not socialists. They have no objection, in any policy document, to champagne.

Nope but it is a rather embarrassing media relations faux pas for extremely obvious reasons.

I don't think anyone gives a toss who isn't a committed opponent of the Conservative Party. People drink booze, incredible amounts of it is knocked back at conferences, people like champagne. It, uniquely, is associated with celebration - and large events are often at least part celebratory.

That's about the end of it. I drink champagne. I can just about manage that - as well as living in a house, having a fancy coffee machine, wearing decent shoes and so on - while caring about poverty.

We definitely had a conversation about Eastern European immigrants forcing down fruit-picker's wages, or something like that.

What programme?

I dont recall it, I very rarely talk about immigration because of the bigoted remainer stance you all to regularly show (you are far from on you're own). However I may of spoken about the tory government policy of moving travellers on, the effect that had on rural farmers and how they have been replaced by EU nationals. Thinking about it, i doubt it because it's too easy to use that against any argument I'd of been making for leave at the time, unless it was on a non brexit thread?

Unbelievable you make smarty pants comments about how elitist I am regards a non literal comment i made about a old comedy show, and now you admit you dont know what program is.

I meant that Mr Bridge hadn't been served champagne at a Labour conference.
Obviously champagne would be served there in other contexts.

The Tories always remind me of that bit in The Office where the boss tells his subordinates he's got good news - he's being promoted, everyone else is fired.

That was brilliant ....."You're still thinking about the bad news aren't you?"

Do you don’t think that this gives off a bad message/ impression or that Downing Street spinners would have tried to suppress this if they had been able to? Of course it does and they would do..

No one is suggesting MPs should have to undertake a vow of abstinence and poverty to be MPs but to be drinking champagne at such an event does I think illustrate a lack of contact with reality.

No it doesn't, not in anyway.

I dont care about the conservative party much one way or the other but you must admit there is a rather deep sense of irony surrounding this picture, especially considering (according to the article) the topic theyre about to discuss.

You don’t think drinking from a crate of champagne at a discussion about poverty gives off a bad message?

I’m sure most people would agree with me that it does. I don't think it necessarily means they don’t care about poverty but I think it falls under being misguided or in bad taste. No?

If still not, how about if they held the meeting on poverty at an all inclusive five star resort in the Bahamas?

Feel free to chip in too @L i b

What do you think about dianne abbot sending her kids to private schools and then wanting to ban them?

Slightly different kettle of fishing course but I think the two cases will rub people the wrong way, and for the same reasons. IE a lack of sincerity on the politicians part

This is the stawman, its not a meeting to discuss poverty it's a party conference where the subject may be brouched.

I don't know if you have been involved in a party or been passionate about one. The party conference is a time you can go and see you're poltical heros and discuss politics with like minded people. Let's not forget politic is a hobby to some, a conference is not a meeting to discuss one such issue, it's a celebration get together and joyful occasion.

They are not fully part of the establishment (although they may indeed have links or connections with it) same with Corbyn actually and indeed trump. They are not of the same cloth as the people who have been running the show for the last forty plus years.,

There is clearly a consensus establishment policy position amongst ‘mainstream’ parties of mass immigration, foreign wars, privatisation, censorship and increasingly deranged social liberalism which are highly unpopular and of which the above are at least partially opposed to (hence ‘populist’)

Whose shaming whom?

I think youve utterly missed the point of the article. Never mind the fact that the Champagne photographed there most certainly isnt "plonk".

Or maybe you need to learn the difference between 'missing the point' and 'people who disagree with you?'

Oh did it appears a nerve was touched
Either way, no, you missed the point of the article when you went off on some weird tangent and started rambling on about taxing the rich - something that manifestly has nothing to do with the article.

The straw man is you saying it ‘may be broached’ . The fact is it was.

You don’t need champagne to enjoy yourself. Unless I’m mistaken that champagne was for MPs..

Maybe I’m just annoyed at the lack of thought RE PR- my inner Malcolm tucker is screaming 😂

They are, but I typically don’t do poverty workshops at them. 😂
