A career in fashion or medicine?

Medicine is a very tough profession so you shouldn’t just do it because you get good grades. Grades won’t even guarantee you a place at med school. You haven’t even given me an example of why you love medicine but have told me about your sketchbook.

However I can remember my son, who is a medical student, running home to tell me how St. John ambulance came to do a first aid demo in his primary school , and how wonderful it was.

I can remember running home to tell my mother that I had had my first French lesson. We had learnt a song and it was really exciting.. and I ended up with a degree in French

I think fashion sounds fascinating. Plus you don’t get the on calls or the lawsuits eh

I would probably pick fashion design as it way more fun and exciting! But the only thing I’m concerned about is the salary difference ... because I love clothes and fashion that’s where I want to spend my money (as materialistic as that sounds I know ..) but a fashion designer doesn’t get payed that much I don’t think ? Also , I didn’t take art for gcse bc it’s only recently I’ve been considering it!

There are a lot of careers in fashion beyond purely the design: marketing, management, buying, supply chain, PR, fashion illustrators, merchandisers, stylists, pattern makers, fashion writers, e-commerce, production manager etc. So consider options beyond solely design.

oh c'mon theres more guarantees with doing medicine than there is with doing fashion
plus you can save lives, make better money and will have more useful knowledge if you do medicine
what can fashion do for you, other than help you dress better?

If you are curious about medicine, why don’t you join St. John ambulance like my son did, and then come back and tell us about it.

I was a doctor’s wife once, and I never had one item of designer clothing in my wardrobe.

Medicine is not as well paid as you think, and if you are on call constantly, as you will be in hospital, you will be too knackered to go out in said designer clothes

Here’s a thought! You can do both no matter what ppl say ‘you can only get one degree’
You can do medicine for now as it’s the most demanding. After specialising and working for a few years as a doctor you can do a part time degree in fashion and design. Done you can do both

Don’t just do medicine for the money - contrary to what some people are saying on here I would say if you are into fashion don’t rush anything and perhaps take a gap year to figure out what you really want as medicine will not be easy and as someone who feels it is a vocation I would say you have to be sure as there will inevitably be challenges and a gap year is a good way to allow yourself to think about things. If you did do medicine and were desperate to do fashion I’m sure you would be able to take a break in your career but that is a long way off yet
