Help immediately! A level english language investigation help!

Lakoff - variations of women’s language like hypercorrect, specialised lexicon, hedging etc

Tannen - Status vs Support. Men will talk about how good they are to assert power whereas women will talk about how much they can support and nurture

Overt and Covert Prestige - rarely linked to a single theorist but exam boards accept theorists and concepts as the same. Women will have to be more overt to assert power, especially in a mixed sex conversation. This will come through in low frequency lexis and hypercorrect grammar among other things

Zimmerman and West - If you have a transcript of a mixed sex debate, look into the turn taking and interruptions as Z&W theorised that men made 96% of interruptions due to the power imbalance!

No worries!! I’m on a gap year right now so I’m not at uni until this time next year but I’m off to Uni of York to do Linguistics!

What interested you to study linguistics ??? And are you studying English language alongside it ? And if not, why??

I had a lovely English Language teacher which was a lot of my inspiration to do Linguistics because that’s what her speciality is and she talked a lot about it but I actually started with everything but like I wrote personal statements for Film, Literature and Creative Writing always because I liked the language involved and then I was like oh yeah I can do a degree just about where the language came from but I only decided that like a week before UCAS opened so that was stressful ahaha.

York do do it with English Language too but they only really offer the History of the English Language and the rest are Linguistics modules so I chose straight Linguistics just because I preferred the flexibility of having free elective modules so I can do Language if I want but I can also do a module from any other department

You can do! I think I did very briefly but for me most of that went into my methodology and then a bit later obviously my analysis!

For what your hypotheses should be, just look into what you want to find out and how you think it’ll work out so I said stuff like older texts will have more low frequency lexis because it’s uncommon to what we have today and then I either had to prove myself right or wrong with the theory later on in my analysis, I did translations but it’s the same sort of idea!

Thank you! Lastly, in a spoken interaction, what stuff can I mention on pragmatics and semantics? I know what stuff I can talk about regarding lexiss eg pronouns, adjectives etcwhen writing my analysis but not quite sure for the aforementioned. Any help on that would be great!

Hi! So turn taking and the Zimmerman and West theory of 96% of interruptions theory does fall under pragmatics but you could also look at length of the utterances as it could imply either power to hold a room or rambling to prove intelligence through overt prestige, the latter of which would probably relate more to women’s speech.

You could also look at exophoric referencing because some people might reference ideas relating to the debate to make it more informed because there’s power in knowledge (as said by Foucault). For semantics you could also look at the sentence types because if they said use a lot of indicatives then they again have intelligence and confidence in what they’re saying but then if they use rhetorical interrogatives to engage the audience (especially if it’s used alongside synthetic personalisation) they could be using it to gain positive face which might help them to win the debate through personal power!
