I caught the tail end of a tv interview where a woman speaking in support of the protests said she hoped no-one got hurt. Then complained that during a stop-and-search a 17yo 'boy' was arrested when police found scissors in his bag! What was he going to do with them, cut out fancy letters and pictures to go on a protest banner?

If they want petrol and diesel cars off the road, why disrupt the people using public transport and take a hammer to the windows of the Department of Transport?

Shooting the messenger changes nothing. The hard truth is that if we do not make significant changes to our society, a delayed commute will be the least of our concerns. Non disruptive protests have been ignored, groups like XR have little choice but to force people to pay attention. If the government wants to end disruption, they can simply take action on the climate crisis.

These people are idiots. One wonders if they actually realise they are calling for all of the nation's 26 million gas boliers to be removed within a short timescale. None of the industries concerned could possibly cope, and many of the home owners concerned cannot afford the change. Electricity costs about four times more than gas too, so a typical heating bill would rise from £500 a year to £2,000 a year. And that assumes that the electricity generators can cope with that kind of demand. They cannot, obviously.

The extra 17,000 wind turbines (which would not work in a storm or on calm days) would require us to devote an extra area of about three times the size of Wales to wind-powered generation. And build it all in five years (while getting rid of the gas boilers, of course). Is that realistic?

The simple way to deal with those who glue themselves to things is to yank them off.

You mean people who have to get to work and have real jobs, real families, real needs are sick of the charade a bunch of 16-30 yo's with nothing to do M-F

who have almost certainly never:
-Been cited in an academic paper
-Performed an extensive literature search and review on climate change
-Written a conference or journal paper
-Participated in academic conferences focusing on climate change.

yet feel entitled to preach science....

Well the science has been known about for the last century. There has been more than enough time to sort this out and switch to more sustainable energy sources. Its the government's criminal inaction and neglect that has caused this situation today. And the situation will only get worse. If we don't have the ability today to switch to better energy sources then we won't in 2100 either. But actually we do have the ability. What's lacking is political will.Politicians would rather put short term profit above having a stable environment for future generations.

XR, for their opponents they're the gift that goes on giving.

A spokesman just on an interview with talk radio defended the guy kicking the commuter in the face by saying it was self defence, even though several million have seen that it blatantly wasn't self defence.

Also there was a massive crowd shouting and throwing stuff at him. The guy dragged him off a train. I'm fairly sure it qualifies as self defense.

What we need is a de-carbonisation glidepath. We have a minimum energy requirement locally & globally. And moving large twh energy supplies on-off grid cant be done overnight (its needs to be a slow manageable well-exercised logistical strategy)

The UK has actually surpassed all targets (outlined in the 1990 GHG reduction plan to reduce it to net C-emissions to 20% of that at the time).

What really needs to be developed is higher efficiency systems coupled to CCS technology (as is being rolled out), this is very costly and hence takes time but the research is now largely funded by the central government and places such as epsrc.

Is climate change real & need to tackled yes, is XR doing anything useful, No.

Green technology is around & is getting better, and by 2050 we should be able to be carbon-net-neutral (without XR running round like a bunch of *******s).

The UK isnt the problem, we will be carbon neutral by 2050 and are current footprint is drastically reducing to a manageable level by 2030 already its BRIC, US & Mexico where global impacts need to change & we don't have the leverage to change that.

Extinction rebellion are protesting against the mass extinction of life on earth and the decimation of our current human civilisation.They are actively opposed by powerful fossil fuel lobbies and the majority of government. The two are not comparable and its idiocy to think they are.

Brexiteers might not agree with you but they sought the largest mandate ever in a UK democratic vote where the PM said: this is your decision & it will be implemented

XR: go around disrupting hard working people trying to support their families and dont actually do anything relevant to climate change, otherwise they would spend their time in a lab or research office working on improving the required technology.
