What subjects could I teach?

I’m in year 12 studying biology chemistry and history at a level. In thinking of getting into teaching at a secondary level after uni and I’m interested in which subjects I could teach. I know this depends on your degree, so with any science degree (I’m thinking biochemistry), could I teach general science up to just before gcse? And with biochemistry, would I be able to be qualified to teach both biology and chemistry at gcse and a level?
Would there be any chance I could teach history without a history degree?
Also, I have grade 5 music theory, will have grade 8 piano by year 13 and did gcse music (Although idk if that counts for anything) would I be qualified to teach music at pre-gcse or gcse standard?

you’d more likely be able to teach science, not music as it’s not a level/degree level. I think for the biology/chemistry teaching you’d have to look at the course descriptions as they’re all the same. I know for me, a social science pgce would allow me to teach both sociology and psychology, but I could also do a psychology pgce instead. I don’t know if it’ll be the same for you, but you may be able to find a pgce that will let you teach both (if you want).

Thanks! I haven’t looked into the process of becoming a teacher in much detail so I definitely need to start doing that.

You train to teach not teach a specific subject. Your Headteacher can direct you to teach outside your specialism. It sounds like you will be best placed to teach Science but I would happily use you for a few lessons of Key Stage 3 music with grade 8 piano and grade 5 music theory.
Before you go back into education take a couple of years out. Travel the world. Do some cool jobs. Do some dull jobs. Live life and gain an incite what what makes the world beyond the classroom.

Given that from next year all teacher will be teachers of life on top of everything else, I can't help but think limiting your life experience to academia only is somehow missing out.

Hi,

If you'd be doing a degree in biochemistry, you'd be best placed to teach science. At secondary level, you can choose a science specialism (e.g. you will train in 'Secondary Science with Biology' or 'Secondary Science with Chemistry) but the expectation is that you can teach all 3 sciences to GCSE level with your specialist science (or sciences) to A-Level standard. As there's such a shortage of science teachers around, you'll find jobs easily and because it's a core subject and you'll probably be used predominantly for science. In saying that however, your A-Level in History does mean that you're entitled to teach it to GCSE. The general rule is that if you can teach a subject that you have an A-Level (but no degree) in to GCSE which means that you could be drafted in to teach History as well. Hope this helps.
