Tips personal statement: PhD postgraduate application Uni of Cambridge / Oxford

Hi everyone,

I am applying for a Ph.D. at universities in the UK.

I have recently finished the first draft of my personal statement.

I would like to receive some constructive feedback, so I wonder if there is anyone who could advise me on improving my personal statement.

Also, I am happy to swap with someone else to help you improve your personal statement.

Hope to hear back from you!

Thanks.

Please don't send your personal statement to anyone you don't know and trust. You would be putting yourself at serious risk of plagiarism.

You can submit your statement to our PS Review service by posting it in this forum:

Dear Charlotte,

many thanks for letting me know of this risk. I followed your advice and used the PS Review service. Hopefully, someone will be able to review my PS even though I am not a heavy user of The Student Room yet.

Thanks!

So as a current PhD student (engineering) , not at Oxbridge.

I would say dont let it be boring or unnecessarily long, I got accepted & funding on my first application, my personal statement was roughly 1 A4 page, which i found really concise based on how much stuff I had to say.

-I think you need to talk about subject academics: stuff that will be important to the research & how you understand some of it and are passionate about it.
-Understand your audience, about the relevant supervisor: make sure you understand who is reading your application and it will interest them.
-Show your passion: things you have done that are above & beyond a normal student in your area of interest.
-Make sure you highlight your academic track record, any super high scores on key modules or disso etc., any academic prizes...

-If you can show a strong academic record, a subject passion & a keen interest in research you should get an interview (obviously this is relative to the applicant pool). I would also contact the supervisor prior to the application, I think having a good rapport before submitting is helpful, you have to work alongside each other for the next 3.5 years.
