thank you!!! i know, it is gonna be stresful but i think i can do it!

im planning on maybe doing an artefact, possibly architectual model of a stage (in terms of design to a set spec) with drawings and concept ideas. i'm looking into taking my architecture down the theatre set design route!
Good luck!
I love the rainbow text:gah:
Switching schools definitely sounds like a good idea if you’re unhappy where you are atm:yep:
Looking forward to seeing how it goes:hugs:

UPDATE NO. 1: starting off small

i'm so technologically inept when it comes to TSR forums, I don't know how to like start a new GYG thread so I can update my original one aaaaaaaaa

(if anyone has any tips and tricks to mastering this please let me know by replying thank u)

ANYWAYS!

welcome back to my GYG 2019/20, its been a while since I updated but BOY has some stuff happened...

so firstly, I retook my english language and maths exam. im not sure if I mentioned this in my introduction post but I was unhappy with the grades I got in the summer exams and I decided it wouldn't hurt to retake them, and honestly... im happy I did.

i did edexcel in both papers (I took higher maths) and I think I did alright.

not gonna lie, was EXTREMELY thrilled with the English papers. they were probably some of the better papers ive seen and I went in wayyyyyyy more prepared than last time and it really paid off; I managed to answer pretty much everything in confidence and now its just a waiting game until the 16th January

maths was..... well maths. I think I had a bit more of an advantage this time, seeing as a lot of the maths I used in GCSE ive been able to master in physics a level, so i felt more confident in the exam than normal. saying that though, I did struggle to answer some of the questions but Id like to think I did well enough to go up a few grades eeeee

now back to the exciting stuff: a levels

a couple of weeks back we did our first 3 week test (just to see how we were getting on) and I didn't do as well as I hoped. they were pretty tricky tests but regardless I was disappointed with myself

In biology I got a D (about 43%)
in physics I got a C (about 58%) and was one mark away from a B
in art, well, you don't really get a test for art but my teacher is fond of my stuff so far so that good I guess?

the biology one really hit me, I was so upset when I got my test back as I worked hard for it too. since then, ive been trying to switch the ways I revise around. im beginning to use Seneca and resources on TSR to help me improve and I think its working? practise questions help more than I can begin to describe but theyre so difficult to get right, and me being me, I get frustrated easily so its difficult to motivate myself to do them.

to add to the obstacles im currently facing, im under immense pressure from my school at the moment to do well. my 'friends' are also causing me a lot of stress. ive been getting more and more sick, and more easily sick too. I took a week off school about 5 weeks ago as I had a stomach bug which meant I kept vomiting and I spent most of my days asleep so I was already behind from that. I also took a week off recently due to a really bad cold I caught off my mum, whicb set me back further. my anxiety is at the worst its ever been, like EVER. I have multiple panic attacks every day and cry every day when I get home because of a release of stress when I get home and im struggling to sleep at night. I also have started shaking much more and ive passed out on some occasions. it gets me really down and I struggle to get out of bed most days, (I get up at 6:30 as i like 2 hours from my school) which makes me late to school which makes me more stressed and gets me even more down and a lot more depressing stuff I wont go into on here but yeah.

on that note, ive got two options;

1.

my mum suggested I take a gap year now. we talked it through with someone who is currently a teaching assistant elsewhere, and she said it might be a good idea to try and help myself heal... but im wary of what that might entail. it would involve me leaving school after this term finishes for Christmas and getting a full time job somewhere for the rest of the year and study in my own time. then I would come back and resit my first year at my local college taking the same a levels as i am now. it would give me time to focus on my mental health and get my confidence back up. it would also help me bring up my savings for uni or other programmes I want to do. my only concern is that the uni i want to go to might frown upon it, but it would give me time to go and to enrichment programmes to help boost my personal statement??? if anyone has doe this or has some advice leave a reply, its greatly appreciated!!

2.

continue where I am now and leave at the end of the year, redoing my first year at my local college (they do different exam boards) and try and make it through this year. my only concern is that my mental health with continue to deteriorate further to th point that its even more detrimental to my studies and I'mscared I wont get the predicted grades I want. thing may improve, or they may get worse, but at the moment its affecting my physical health and my school is doing little to help me with that.

at the moment, im just taking each day as it comes, and trying to get through chunks of missed work step by step. ive got the whole weekend to focus on that as im away with my grandparent and ive got no plans, so its gonna be easy to sit and study comfortably.

ill update this again when im a little further into the term, probably at the end. if you guys ever have any questions or want to chat, leave a reply and ill get back to you <3 it means a lot for you guys to want to join me on this adventure. and I look forward to what the f u t u r e o f s t u d y had to offer ^-^

Since I’m nosy, I’d like to know the art story (GCSE).

Was there a specific reason that you redid maths and English? IMO you’ve already got great grades.

Well I’ll give my 2 cents. You were probably busy revising for the GCSEs which you didn’t factor in. That really raised your stress level. I would take a half term to try and cope. That being said, that would be best for me, maybe not for you, but still think about it.

Also yeah bio, I’m in the same rut. But what I am doing is answering one q at a time (the long ones/graph ones) and then checking the markscheme and writing it down. Ignore the marks for now. If there is not enough time or you can’t be bothered, think about the key words you would use and then check if they are correct.

Also get a hobby, or something to look forward to. Idk, a musical instrument or sport, something that gets you up in the morning. It’s a great motivator!

Also GoOd Luck!

thank you so much for this, it helped to hear what someone else thought! ill defo take that advice about the bio as that sounds like a good way to go about things... thank you so much!

I retook my GCSEs just because I felt disheartened when I got my results back, I expected higher results in English as I worked hard for it, and I retook maths as my school required a 7 in maths to take Physics GCSE, but they let me on the course on the condition I got the grade in a retake; since in the summer exam I was about 2 marks from a seven; hence the special consideration.

art is my hobby at the moment. even though I take an a level in it I find myself doing artistic projects outside of school i.e painting my favourite albums on my shoes or painting playing cards with my favourite memes on it to decorate my wall... its hard to factor in time to do things like this though especially with the amount of work at A-Level, but ill definitely try and get some more in!

im going to make a post about the art story now, just as I feel it deserves its own post to really explain things aha

so, i figured you guys deserve to hear about the dreaded GCSE art story....

dun dun dun

GCSE ART: thou art a failure

first off, i failed my art gcse. not only that, i got a U.

so the exam board i did my GCSE with was OCR as my teacher was a senior moderator for the exam board, so having him teach us that exam board meant there ws no need for the school to hire an external moderator for the exams, and it overall just is alot easier and he can give us guidance on what to do to get high grades from him, as ultimately hed be the one who decided how many marks we got for our gcse, which then would be sent to the exam board and catigorized into the according grade boundaries that the board had set. it was the only OCR exam i did out of all 9 subjects i studied during GCSE.

for any of you that do art, you will know that 60% of your final grade is coursework from over the 2 years, often over 2 differnt titles (2 modules of study with a final piece for each) and the other 40% is an exam, consiting of coursework based on a set task teh exam board give out on the 1st january, and a 10 hour exam to create a piece based off of your coursework in the april/may (whenever your centre wants to do it)

our school splits the exam into 2 five hours days, as our timetable is formatted for 5 one hour slots, so it just makes alot of sense. as soon as our chourswork enters the room, it cant leave the room due to the possibility of an unfair advantage on a student if they went home overnight to edit it.

its probably important to mention i suffer quite bad with anxiety. because of this, im in a seperate area for exams, and i am allowed rest breaks just in case i have a panic attack. this happens pretty often sadly.

in the exam on the moday morning, i brought my courswork in in my portfolio case. i assumed my teacher (the exam moderator for our art exams) would collect it in at the end of that day so it was out of our hands and we could crack on with our final piece, but still have access to it incase we needed references for our drawings. i work visually, and i was doing a pretty abstract final peice so i didnt need a reference.

towards the end of the day, i began to have a panic attack quite badly, proabably because of the stress or i was tired or my piece wasnt as far finished as i wanted it or a bit of everything. i didnt think i needed a rest break as it was about five minutes until we left to go home and i was eager to leave as it had been a stressful day. towards the last minute of teh exam, i began to hyperventilate badly and my teacher saw this and he let me go early so i could get out of there, and i would make up the extra minute the next day if i neeeded it. i grabbed my portfolio case and bag and ran out of the room, like i SPRINTED out of the room so i could get outside and get some help and calm down a little.

when I got home i took my portfolio ase into my room and noticed it felt heavier than it should. it wasnt until i looked inside and saw my coursework i began to majourly panic. art is a subject im really passionate about and i was set to get a really good grade (predicted a 9) so i was scared this would be the end of it all. natually, i began to panic and i passed out. luckily my mum was there to calm me down, and i quickly emailed my teacher about what had happened, but i never got a reply (probably because our teahers arent expected to check their emails after 5pm, theres like a disclaimer at the bottom of their emails that says it) but my mum advised that i leave it untouched and take it in the next day and hope he will realise that it was a genuine mistake. needless to say i got very little sleep that night.

when I got to the exam room the next morning, we lined up like we did the next day and he escorted us into the room. he noticed my portfolio case in my hand and stopped me. i said i sent him an email explaining the situation and i was already clloseto tears by this point. he proper screamed at me about how i was letting the school down and how this was disgraceful for me to do. he allowed me to continue my final peice for the rest of the day which was a bit of a struggle after those events. i completed this, and he held me back at the end of the day. he was super annoyed and said this is exactly what i shouldnt have done. said i was sorry but i was in such a panic yesterday i had completely forgot my exam coursework was in my portfolio adnd i genuinely thought it was my empty portfolio but clearly it wasnt, and i had ran out of the room with my coursework inside. he said he had no choice but to report this to the examination board and a full investigation was opened.

my mum had to write a statement about what had happened, in which shed included what i had told her had happened that day and she described how panicked i was at home and how it was a genuine mistake. i was also expected to submit a statement and my coursework was seized by my teacher. my teacher wrote a statement about his version of events and it was all submitted to the examining body. my teacher was pretty negative about the whole thing and he was really rude to me. he said if it were his choice I would've been disqualified immediately and he was saying how id let the department and the school down by doing this. didn't really make me feel much better in the run up to the rest of my exams.

the ultimate response from the exam board was that because they had no evidence to suggest I hadn't heated and edited it during the time I had taken it out of the room, they had to disqualify me for from the exam portion of the GCSE. this meant that 40% of my gcse was gone, and I couldn't really score higher than a five. it was then the schools decision to pull me out of the exam all together and submit nothing as they didn't want a bad grade. as I had not pulled out of the exam early enough, I still had to be entered for a grade, it was just the decision not to submit any of my work over the two year. this meant I got no marks, and hence got a U for my final grade.

Luckily, after some discussion with the headteacher of my school (a really nice guy) he gave me the opportunity to resit the exam portion next year and as my work wasn't submitted, I would have to do no further coursework which is good. he also let me take the a-Level on the condition I id the above, which is an amazing opportunity, so it didn't turn out all bad. overall, the whole process really upset me, as I care about art so much, but I did get over it, its just disheartening to see a U come up on your grade sheet, especially in your favourite subject.

so yeah, theres the story of how I failed my art GCSE. if you wanna reply to this or ask me further questions, just lemme know!

Have you been getting help to deal with the panic attacks?

Won’t lie, same thing happened to me for English lit (got the same grade as you).
Nice work on the physics and good luck for the results!
That’s great! A hobby is wonderful. Could you paint my shoes too?

The art teacher and school policy sounds absolutely disgraceful. It’s a good thing you can redo it though. Have a 4 note song that you sing when about to sleep or when relaxing. Then in stressful situations sing it then and it is calming. Takes a while to work though.

thank you for those ideas, I haven't heard those before but I will be using them as im learning about new techniques to destress every day, and it sounds like it works!

it really is. they publish the results for the school every year and they always go from 9-U so they show what each student gets; our school prides itself on its results as its a grammar school, but I felt it was kind of dodgy when they published them this year the didt include anything below three, even though I know some students who got U's and 1's because of other circumstances… all a bit fishy!!

I am actually thinking of starting an etsy to promote selling the things I paint, so if I do, ill put it on here but m always ready to take my first order ahahahah

Seems like your school is a bit too focused on grades! Speaking of them, did you get back your GCSEs certificates today?
Nice! I’d definitely offer if my shoes weren’t already bright yellow. Everyone seems to think it’s too bright for some reason.
