The Student Room Group

Why do I feel like I’m drowning in year 13 and it’s only November?

Hey all, I’m just a girl with big big dreams but making little progress so far.
Who can relate and how are you guys coping:smile:

There is no shortcut to success, I personally handled A-Levels by deleting all my social media and ghosting friends in year 13. Got into LSE after that whilst ive seen many friends of mine with A*AA predicted with offers from top unis getting rejected as they got distracted in year13 and achieved AAB and below.

Education comes first, if you are not coping with the content that means you are not investing as much time in your studies, typically the average A* student studies from day1 investing 4-6h daily. Sorry to be blunt but that's the harsh reality in which only a small set percentage of students will get A*s and As. Getting an A* at A-Levels is all relative to how smart you are in comparison to your year group who are doing the same A-Level, hence the existence of grade boundaries.

What did you get in your A levels.
Personally I believe you dont need to ghost friends completely, only near the end ( near exams). As long as they talk specifically about studies with you.

I got AAA in bio chem and maths and didn't ghost ppl.
I agree with everything else you said tho

No, thank you for your honesty, really. Year 12 was a particularly unpleasant experience so I guess I’ve been playing into this victim mentality for a while now, I tend to feel sorry for myself often these days. I just don’t know how to snap out of it. I want to do medicine and I’ve always been the work hard, go getter type, but something seems off these days, it’s like I don’t have tunnel vision anymore.
I can’t tell you what I spend my time doing , I barely speak to my friends/socialise. I guess I have this huge fear of failure that I don’t even want to try.
There’s a lot of pressure surrounding me this year and I don’t know how to handle it except running, hope this made some sort of sense.

Ofc ghosting doesn't mean you completely air them, but yeah that was my personal opinion.

Got A*AABaa (6 AS, 4 A2, not impressive knowing two of the A-Levels are in foreign languages I speak fluently) + A* in EPQ but I wasn't that bothered with A-Levels, may call me a hypocrite because I got distracted in year13 and didn't achieve my predicted hence the B grade. Currently studying Econ at LSE.

Honestly A-Levels were the two most terrible years of my life, the mental stress of having to get into a top uni and stress having asian parents consistently on my back telling me to get A*s was too much. So I defo understand where you're coming from. What you get in your A-Levels truly makes a difference, hope all goes well with you.

Wow this really relatable. I'm feeling very much the same rn, including the normally a 'go getter' part. Idk but I guess we've just got to keep going and persevere. I wouldn't say cut off all socialising as when I've tried that in the past it makes my productivity drop cause it makes me sad. It's about trying to find a balance as I do agree with @Prix0 that education comes first.

Lmao how does one keep going if they’re not even ‘going’ currently, time is ticking and I have A*AA predictions waiting for me🤷*♀️
