hey
i’m a year13 student currently studying btec level 3 applied science. i’ve applied for diagnostic radiography at the university of leeds. i’ve heard back from 3 universities and completed 2 interviews. my third one is next week. i haven’t heard anything from leeds yet. how long did they take to get back to you and did you have an interview first or did you just get an offer straight away ?

I went through clearing as I had changed my mind literally a month before results day. Got some work experience under my belt quickly and rang up on the day. They said to me come in for an interview and I got an offer straight after. Everyone has to be interviewed when it comes to healthcare. They dont want to just see academic skills, they also want to know what other skills you can offer.

Its amazing. The course is structured well and the placement is the best bit about it. Can be a bit dry at sometimes as the lectures are 2 hours long. However, lecturers know exactly what theyre doing and people who have qualified from Leeds can even specialise straight after their degree if they wish to do so. Some have gone on to do Medicine and Dentistry but most people stick to Radiography. Also, all the third years that I know pretty much tell me that a lot of them have got interviews and job offers already.

What BTEC are you doing? Whats your predicted grades? What work experience have you got? Have you done anything extra such as stock/forex trading or Open University credits etc? Why are you interested in Finance?

Durham is competitive, however, if you can make yourself stand out, you'll have an excellent shot at getting in. Just my two cents.

The interview went really well. I actually like interviews because I like to talk quite a bit. They asked me about why I wanted to do Radiography etc as well as the usual such as hobbies. Then they'll ask you some curveball questions (like really out of the ordinary) so you'll have to answer those yourself. Overall, make sure you have other experiences such as care homes and not just Radiography placements. Everyone is going to have that so you have to ask yourself - what makes you stand out of the crowd? A BTEC isn't going to cut it. Neither will one day on placement. In my case, I had varied experiences at different hospitals and I did extra qualifications such as Open University credits + all the usual hobbies. Some of mine include Ethical Hacking, Arduino, Cricket, Badminton, Piano, Chess, studying Classical Civilisation (just general reading but I would eventually like to do an A level or GCSE in it). Theres a few others but I really cannot be arsed to write them all down. Anyway, this is a guide for you and good luck with your application.

What do you think will make you stand out? I plan to get experience next year but the big question is where do I go to get these experiences, I can never find anything on work experience.

To get experience for next year you should start looking around now. Phone up departments and look online. The only reason I got work experience was because I knew the consultant.

That's a tricky one. I've done a BTEC in engineering, but it was part of an apprenticeship and now I'm doing a HNC whilst still being an apprentice - so I've done a bit of everything (apart from Uni). Have you any idea what you'd like to do after education? :smile:

Don't do an HNC. Do a degree apprenticeship in Engineering. You're earning potential over time will increase, you'll have a degree fully paid for you + you'll have loads of experience. It would make you a good candidate to eventually attain your Chartered status. Depending on your company, they may even pay for your Masters and further training.

On the other hand, University is great if you are slightly more academically inclined. If you don't have a degree, then you are eligible for student finance to fund your degree. If you do have one, you won't be eligible. Degree's are certainly good in Engineering, however, this depends on what University you go to and what kind of work experience you can get alongside your course. There are plenty of older people who certainly have gone on to University and I would also highly recommend you going because it is a great experience.

Also what type of Engineering are you doing?
Completed a BTEC Level 3 in Applied Science last year, and am now a first year physiotherapy student. :smile:

It's going well so far thanks! Course is intense but that was expected - getting used to it now. :biggrin:

I think in terms of the way I like to learn and be assessed, I am glad I went down this route. I personally benefitted a lot through the practical aspects and coursework rather than just being assessed through exams. To do physio also required clinical work experience as well, which also aided me a lot in university interviews.
