Is dentistry harder than medicine?

A few people studying dentistry who have medic friends claim that the dentistry course is a lot harder than the medical course.... I was wondering if people agreed with this comment or not? In my opinion i would think that they are both equally difficult!

Doesn't studying medicine involve a lot more Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry and Pharmacology than dentistry ?

Yeah because pharmacy is easy like ...

Saying that pharmacy is harder than medicine or dentistry is not the same as saying media studies is harder than medicne or dentistry ... I've actually heard comments made about pharmacy being harder than medicine ... obviously there's no real way to tell because nobody is going to be studying the two degrees simultaneously.

I'd say dentistry is probably harder than med overall...

one bro did dentistry (and dropped out) whilst the other does med...

but thats just my opinion :smile:

Medicine is harder

Medicine isn't really difficult, there is a huge volume to learn (probably more than any other subject bar law), but the concepts aren't essentially difficult. I lived with a pharmacy student and some of the minutiae of detail he had to learn was more than me, but I just had a larger breadth to learn.

Also, the clinical side of medicine is pretty much incomparable to anything other than dentistry, so you couldn't draw pharmacy comparisons there.

As for whether dentistry is harder, from what I have heard it is to an extent - however as said above, the preclinical stuff is largely similar - and clinical undergraduate teaching is more detailed, but less far-reaching (so in that respect it depends a lot on whether you are better at recalling large amounts about one, or many topics).

Will have to chat to our dental graduates and see...

Ok so basically, dental students learn EVERYTHING medical students know, except for the legs feet, arms and hands. They are both equally as difficult, just because people think that dentistry is directly related too the facial region they think its easy, diseases relate to every part of the body and can have an affect on every part of the body. Dentists also have the responsibility of diagnosing cancers like doctors.

Everyone's definition of difficulty is different..........in my opinion...both dentistry and med requires a lot of mental strength.......but as a dental student I say it is tough because it requires a lot of hand work as well as mind work....

I'm studying Dentistry and we Max fax and oral med lecturers who have done both, dentistry and medicine and we also have students on the course who have a previous degree in medicine. Each one of them has said that Dentistry was/is harder than medicine because dentistry is both knowledge heavy and clinically heavy, you are basically learning the theory and specialising at the same time.

We have to study even the legs, feets, arms and hand although the depth is not the same while really has to focus on the head and neck region because there’s a lot of major nerves, artery and veins while having to understand the properties of materials used in dentistry and having to develop good hand skills and imagination like constructing teeth from a really bad structure.

I may be biased here but dentistry is relatively harder as we also take basic medicine courses then specialize in head and neck plus we do alot of practical work

Do you find your work fulfilling, enjoyable and challenging as a dentist? The small experience i've had was very similar but it was only a small glance in a small dentist.
