One is simply the name for the process (type), the other describes how it happens (mechanism).

so what is the answer?

A mechanism for example is nucleophilic substitution/addition, electrophilic addition. However, as for the name for eg its reduction, oxidation, dehydration

For this instance, the mechanism is electrophilic addition

so the mechanism for ethene reacting with hydrogen bromide is electrophilic addition, but the type of reaction is what?

I disagree with @pazl2.

The name of the reaction is exactly that, in this case electrophillic addition. The mechanism should involve drawing some molecules and some curly arrows to show HOW the reaction happens.
