Parties: I can't offer much insight as I'm not interested in parties, but I've heard the East campus tends to be quieter. So if you want somewhere quieter maybe pick an east campus college, if you want somewhere with easier accessibility to parties pick a west campus college. Every college hosts social events regularly and there are an abundance of non-college specific events though, so you'll have plenty of social options whichever college you go to.
Sport: While there are college-specific teams, I think there's more focus on the university wide sports clubs. No matter what college you choose you will have access to the York Sport Centre, York Sport Village, and sports clubs, so you're not going to be missing out if you don't go to a particular college. If there is a particular sport you are interested in you ask college reps which colleges have a team for that sport or pick a college close to the relevant facilities.
Location: Depends on what you're looking for in terms of location. For example some people prefer to have their accomodation close to their department to minimise travelling, but others prefer having accomodation on a different campus to their department to separate study and life.
Accomodation: Each college offers a variety of accommodation options. You can find a full list of the accommodation options with their price and college here. Even the band 1 accommodation has nice bedrooms, so you'll have a good room whichever college/accommodation you choose. Shared bathrooms are cleaned every weekday, so you don't have to worry about the shared bathrooms being grim. I think the main thing to keep in mind is how many people you will be sharing with. If you're a social butterfly you might enjoy sharing a house with 17 other people as there's always going to be someone about to socialise with, but keep in mind the kitchen is *not* going to be kept tidy.

thanks so much, that's very helpful - also what do you think about being catered or self - catered ... if you are catered can you still cook in your college?

Is there still a kitchen in the catered accommodation?

You can still cook if you’re catered! I was catered in first year and we had a big kitchen with three ovens, three hobs, three microwaves and three kettles between 14 people. You’re only catered Monday - Friday for breakfast and lunch so you need to cook for yourself at weekends and lunch

would you say that uni life is cheaper for you when you are catered vs self catered?
Do you have to rent a house in 2nd year or can you still live on campus?

Honestly I think it depends on each person - for me, I don’t have a full English every morning (hardly ever) and then never really had two courses in the evening, so I think I would have been better off financially going self catered because I just didn’t require all the food provided. However I think if you are someone who eats a lot, is nervous about cooking, likes the social element of catered accommodation etc then going catered would be worthwhile

You can still live on campus past first year and you can either apply on your own or with a group of friends. I would just say that on campus accommodation is very expensive compared to private, but the quality of private accommodation is definitely lacking in some places so worth considering all options!

You can, I always just got cereal, but the price for food is included in the accommodation price, so you don’t pay less for eating less if you know what I mean? Which is why for me it would have been cheaper to go self catered
Can you order your supermarket shopping online and have it delivered to your accommodation?

Yep! In some colleges the van may have to park a bit further away than others but I know a lot of people who did that on Hes East

Depends on what food you buy if you're self-catered. I usually spend less than £30 a week on food, which is easily cheaper than catered. It very doable to save money by being self-catered, but you do need to consider your food budget.

You can, but it's more expensive. Many supermarkets have a minimum order amount which is higher than what I would normally spend on a weekly shop, and you have to pay for delivery.
