Law students: help me! [Book recommendations]

Hi,

I will be starting (hopefully) my Law degree in September and I really want to start incorporating good non-fiction reads in my daily life, so that I am a little more 'opinionated'. That sounds so sad, but it's true.

What books would you recommend? Please help me out x
What sounds even sadder is being one of those students who never have anything of value to contribute. I don't have a life, might as well become academically brilliant.

Oh, and please could you recommend some to me? I would appreciate it so much.
Any other law students on the site willing to make recommendations? x

Thank you! Can I ask you what year you are in? I don't necessarily want books on law, but rather any good reads which might help me in becoming more knowledgeable about contemporary issues. If you have a favorite non-fiction, recommend away. x

i don't think reading other people's opinions will make you more opinionated. opinionated is a personality trait. opinionated has little to do with knowledge.

if your local library is anything like mine, you'll have very few options on the subject. i would literally just pick up anything that looks a little bit legal especially cuz it's free.

but if you really want a suggestion, my favourite is The Social Contract by Jean-Jacques Rousseau. or anything by John Rawls.

if you want to become more opinionated and learn stuff, i would suggest listening to podcasts. Freakonomics is a good one but really just fish around and listen to lots, especially Brexit related and British politics since you will be largely committing your life to the subject first year.

Hi Notinthemood,

There is a good list of blogs, articles and books for lawyers and law students here:
https://luciditi.ai/Legal/Lists
and here: https://luciditi.ai/Legal/Lists/themes
and this is good: https://www.artificiallawyer.com/
and this is a pretty cool tool:https://luciditi.ai/Simulator/Index

I would also recommend: Tomorrow's Lawyers: An introduction to your Future
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Tomorrows-Lawyers-Introduction-Your-Future/dp/0198796633
Which is a brilliant overview of where the legal profession is going and what skills you should focus on to build a future proof career

Hope they help and best of luck!

Both helpful and polite, please stay on this forum! Not a law student yet, but no doubt this will be of immense use to me in the near future. Many thanks! x
She will be back eventually and I genuinely think she will be thrilled by this comment
