'NHS may use people's phone data to predict mental health issues'

no mention at all in the article about a breach of privacy. i guess so long as the people in question are mentally ill, that's ok.

"The consent of patients under the care of the community mental health teams wasn’t sought, as the trust says it was advised by the UK’s Health Research Authority that it wasn’t needed."

Oh, that's ok then! Really creepy. What if they get it wrong and cart someone off who was otherwise completely fine?

i agree, it's totally wrong.
i think it violates trust and the people who need it most would be even less likely to seek help if they think they're being spied on.

how on earth are phone calls and locations going to be able to help detect a persons mental health status? if anything their viewing history is more important because the last time i checked the number one place for most people to go to seek help, advice or tips from is the internet and social media.

I think they'd be able to access anything you see on your smartphone, so that can include internet history.
Rather unsurprisingly your title is misleading.

Telefonica Alpha used 5 years of pseudonymised Trust historical health data and sociodemographic information to develop different models to identify those with the best predictive power


The initial trial set to run till August 2020 using patient data which they are well within their rights to process and analyse without seeking consent.

Extensive information governance and communications preparatory work is being undertaken alongside active engagement with service users. The project team have sought independent legal advice via Queen’s Counsel and are seeking a view from the Information Commissioners Office (ICO) to verify the pursuit of using mobile network data. The project team are working with service user groups across the Trust to generate understanding of Phase 2 and to codevelop supporting project resources such a trust project webpage and supporting service user information leaflet. Service users will have the ability to ‘opt out’ of their data being used for this project, via the National Opt out process.



Phase 2 of the project looks to include mobile data however first they must first understand the legality of this including privacy concerns. The Trust are aware of this and are taking the necessary steps to ensure they do this properly. Furthermore if it goes ahead there will be systems in place to allow people to opt out of their data being used.

So that settles it, there is nothing shady going on here, just classic clickbait bull**** designed to shock.

Oh so it's okay to breach a person's privacy so long as they're mentally ill? That logic is flawed. People with anxiety/paranoia etc would be sent over the edge if this happens - it won't be good for them and it'd probably make things worse
It says 'may', a large proportion of this site suffers from mental illness. Scaremongering like this is irresponsible.

Don't fall for clickbait.
They can't cope with the people that actually seek help, not sure how this can be useful with the state of things right now.
Who changed the title of this thread? Doesn't seem to be any 'may' about it.
