Hi there,

You're right, it can be a competitive industry. A lot of people start out as runners or production/studio assistants as a way of getting a foot in the door. Even if you're a qualified engineer, it often takes making that 'step down' to start off with.

Also, remember that these kind of roles exist in a range of environments. So as well as recording studios, there's also TV, film and theatre. And live events require a lot of staff with sound engineering skills and experience, not just concerts but large events, conference halls and arenas. So getting in somewhere as an events of admin assistant could also put you in a position to get access to those kind of opportunities when they do come up.
