Is it worth getting a sat nav?

Im just thinking when I pass my test is it worth buying one or shall I just use my phone. I could buy a phone holder for my phone and use google maps but I dont know if it will be as reliable.
I mean the sat nav will only be like £70 for a good brand or even a cheap one for like £40.

I think if it doesn't come standard with the car, they are always worth having.
My advice would be dont go cheap.
Look at Garmin, and tom tom both good brands.
If you have a good amount of mobile data then it’s better to install an application like Waze or Google Maps and set it up with a phone holder and charger.

There is no right or wrong answer here as there are advantages to using both.

A sat nav:

Can live in your car so never gets lost

Does not require mobile data

Will still be there working if your phone is lost or broken

You phone:

Basically free as you've already paid for it

Can display live traffic updates

I think if I didn't already own a sat nav, these days I would probably go down the mobile phone route because of the traffic advantage, but it would be good to keep a backup satnav, just in case.

Many phone sat navs don't require data. I can't see the point in paying for a satnav when a mobile app is free.

Yep ill probably do that
Waze on a phone - has the advantage of crowdsourced real time updates, for mobile speedtraps, accidents, road debris, etc.

You would need to download the maps in advance - this would be difficult if you don't have access to the internet when you start your journey. You would also lose the live traffic advantage. While not a huge problem for actual navigation, it might increase your journey time.

I have a sat nav, as I didn't want to rely on my phone too much as a singular piece of kit (just in case it got lost/stolen, then I'd be without my phone/computer/sat nav etc.).

Don't buy a satnav lol they're pretty much obsolete.

Waze and a phone holder is all you need.
